Seven Volcanoes   —   26th May 2002

Written by Peter

An impressive line up of twelve on the full day walk, and about the same on the concurrent introductory trip.

The first volcano, being Mt Albert, was the easiest, as we drove to the top to start!

Next stop Mt Roskill, via reserves and streets people had never heard of.

Three Kings followed, then through the elegant streets of Epsom to One Tree Hill, where we met up with the intro team (otherwise known as those who could not get out of bed in time). The northern steps made for a sheltered sunny spot to have lunch. We joined the into team until the next summit (Mt St Johns) before going our separate ways. It was good to see a pedestrian-crossing on Greenlane Road now, saves one taking ones life in ones hands to cross this very busy road. Volcano number six was Mt Hobson, towering above the affluent suburb of Remuera. The final ascent was Mt Eden and the planting of the N.Z. flag. Still full of beans Matt took his own challenge of running to the bottom of the crater and back, with a boulder, in under five minutes! Dave would have been very impressed! Unfortunately he did not bring back the correct boulder and therefore failed to impress the judging panel!

A good day out, in rather changeable weather.
