Fitness

Fitness is an iffy point as far as goalkeepers go. The general rule is: the more fit you are, the better.

In order to be an effective goalie, you should be able to run at least one lap of the playing field without equipment, and with equipment is even better. Now, I'm not the most active person; in fact, getting in shape is a definite goal for me. But I've made it for three years now!

OK, so I know you're thinking "Dude, all goalies do is stand back there and do nothing. Why should I be able to run?!". Well, mainly because of practices. In a practice, you need to be able to keep going, one drill after another. If you get out of breath, and have to take a break, you lose time. However, if you do feel you need to take a short breather, do it. Nobody wants their goalie to drop dead from lack of oxygen.

Being physically fit also helps with your agility. When you're fit, your muscles are in good shape, and you're able to react faster. And you'll really need those muscles when you've just made a brilliant save, and the opposing team is carrying the ball to the opposite post; you need to get there, and fast!

All in all, fitness is a definite plus. But if you're not quite there, don't despair. There are plenty of goalies out there who aren't in tip-top shape (myself included!), and some of them are really good!
