Guest Speaker,
Workshop Presenters and Music/Worship Leader

Christian Young Women's Retreat  2003

Guest Speaker:

Aileen Bauer - Aileen is a mom and a speaker for both youth and adults.  For a number of years she worked as a nurse and later taught in the Religion Department at Pacific Union College.  She loves to have fun and recently went snowmobiling in Yellowstone.  You can often find her in church related activities since she is so active there.  The theme for this weekend came from a graduation talk she gave several years ago.  Aileen lives in Angwin, California and she brought one of her daughters with her for the weekend.

Guest Musicians:

Amy and Beth Carlson - Theese two sisters have been praying for God to continue to minister through them in music ministry, and to expand their service.  They attend Lodi Academy and lead music in the Stockton Central Church.  When our original music leader, Kristin Berbawy, had complications from a recent surgery and just got released from the hospital a couple of days before the retreat, Amy and Beth agreed to step in at a moment's notice.  Our thanks to Amy and Beth for filling in, and to Tonja Rizijs, Sacramento Adventist Academy Bible Teacher, for joining them.

Workshop Presenters:

Marilynn Badzik - Marilyn is a psychiatric Registered Nurse and works at Kaiser.  She also has taught many nutritional classes.  She currently leads the PRISM weight loss program at the Carmichael SDA Church, where she is a long time member.  Marilynn has two grown sons and three grandchildren.  She does a lot of traveling, enjoys decorating, antiques and music.
"Do You Want to Become Barbie?" - Do you feel pressured to "look" a certain way?  This discussion group will focus on teen issues, such as peer pressure and the media, which cause teen stress with overweight, anorexia and bulimia.  We will look for practical ways to develop self-esteem and good nutritional habits.  We will learn the secret to accepting ourselves as the person God created us to be.  If you need help or have a friend who needs help, this workshop is for you.

Rosemary Collins - Rosemary, a teacher of Communication at PUC, has taught interpersonal and family communication for 20 years.  Her special area of interest is in gender communication and the difficulties males and females have in their attempts to understand one another.  Married for more than 30 years, Rosemary has two grown sons and a 17 year old daughter.
"Hunters and Gatherers" - Do you sometimes have difficulty understanding why your dad, boyfriend and brother act the way they do?  This workshop explores with humor the ways in which males and females misunderstand one another, the concrete reasons for those misunderstandings, and --most importantly-- what you can DO about it so you can have better relationships!

Bettesue Heid - Bettesue was born and raised as a Seventh-Day Adventist in Boston.  She attended SDA schools through academy and then a public college where her beliefs were tested daily.  She graduated from UC Santa Barbara, and has done graduate work in education.  She currently is the principal of Redwood Adventist Academy in Santa Rosa, California.
"SDA Beliefs: How to Decide for Yourself" - Seventh-Day Adventists have 27 key beliefs.  What are they, and how do they relate to us?  Which ones are most relevant in our society?  We will also discuss misconceptions that many of us have about these doctrines.

Joanne Pierson - Joanne lives in Auburn with her husband Jeff, daughter Christy, and Patches the cat.  She enjoys creating stuff with rubber stamp art, scrap booking, ice skating, time shared with family and friends, and collecting sheep to add to her flock.  She's very active in the Auburn Church and Pine Hills Adventist School, and eagerly awaits the soon return of Jesus.
"Simply You" - Share your Sonshine!  Let others know you care by sending the very best (move over Hallmark!).  Your time spent in creating a hand crafted card from your heart will say volumes to those who receive them.  We'll use a variety of materials and techniques to create uplifting cards.  Please bring your lipstick!

Helen Shells - Helen means "light", which is how Helen sees her role as a Christian.  Retired from the California Youth Authority where she worked with troubled youth in the Special Education Department for many years, she now travels extensively singing and speaking.  Her album, "I'm Nobody, but My Father is the King" also tells her story.
"RSVP: You're Invited to the Party" - Do you ever wonder or have you been asked, "If  we're saved as a gift (by Grace), then why do we have to still be so good (obey the Law)?"  This seminar answers all of those types of questions.  You're invited to heaven's party, all travel arrangements made, all expenses paid.

Kathleen Herrera - Kathy is currently an Assistant Professor at Pacific Union College and enjoys living in the beautiful Napa Valley and within a Christian community.  She is also a licensed private therapist in St. Helena, specializing in family and relationship issues, sexual abuse and eating disorders.  She runs marathons, travels, loves family and helping the community.
"Becoming Assertive in Social Situations (including dating)" - Is it sometimes difficult for you to express your needs, wants, opinions, values, and feelings in a manner others respect?  This workshop will assist you in distinguishing your own aggressive, passive, and assertive behavior patterns to more effectively relate to peers and authority figures.  Since dating situations often challenge our abilities to be assertive, we will review theories and techniques along with practice scenarios to increase your skills in this area as well.
