Ahh, POKÉMON
STADIUM... The game that takes Pokémon battles to
a whole new level. It also has the triple-speed Dodrio Game
Boy that lets you play your Pokémon cartridge on the
N64 up to 3 times as fast! Now that's what I call
convenience.
However, STADIUM is a little different than the Game
Boy version....
- You can't use
Pokémon over Level 100. Any Pokémon that
ARE over Level 100 will be set back to Level
100.
- Pokémon Defensive
types sometimes cancel each other out. In Game Boy
battles, if a Marowak(Ground Type) used an
Earthquake(Ground attack) against a Beedrill(Bug/Poison),
the Ground would have reacted with the Poison and the
attack would be super effective. In STADIUM, since
Beedrill is also a Bug-type (strong against Ground
attacks), the two would cancel each other out and only
normal damage would be recieved. This takes some getting
used to. If you've been using Ground-types to deal with
Grass/Poison-types, you'll have to rethink your
strategy.
- You can actually see each
attack's accuracy rating on the Pokémon Lab PC
screen. Be warned; Even attacks with 100% accuracy will
miss once in a while.
- The Kids' Corner is a
great place to blow off steam from tough battles, but
some of the games are even tougher than battling. You
could lose your hair, sleep and/or sanity on Thundering
Dynamo or Snore War.
- Every time you beat Gym
Leader Castle, you'll recieve a rare Pokémon.
You'll get one of the following: Squirtle, Bulbasaur,
Charmander, Eevee, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Kabuto, or
Omanyte. If you have a GAMESHARK, you can catch a
heck of a lot better specimens than the ones they give
you. The STADIUM Pokémon act as traded
Pokémon, so they'll generally be weaker, and you
can't change their names. If you don't have a
GAMESHARK, take these rare specimens anyway;
they're still pretty good.
- By beating the Poké
Cup and the Prime Cup, you unlock the triple-speed Game
Boy that you can use to speed up your
playtime.
- After you complete all the
Cups and challenge the Mewtwo from Pokémon; the
First Movie, you'll unlock ROUND 2. This time around,
all the battles are about three times as hard. You'd
better have captured a Mewtwo by now, or you won't stand
a chance against the Elite Four, or the Prime
Cup.
- You can only use 3 of your
6 Pokémon at a time in battles besides Free
Battling and fighting Mewtwo. Choose Wisely.
- Most of the lower Cup
divisons have a rule that you can't enter Pokémon
over a certain level, height, or weight, and the three
you choose's levels must add up to under a certain
number. Raise all the Pokémon you're going to use
1 level above the minimal level requirement. You'll be
glad you did.
- The hardest battle set in
STADIUM is the Poké Cup, ROUND 2. Catch a
Zapdos, an Alakazam and an Articuno for this
one.
- All of the other trainers'
Pokémon have TM-taught attacks that will catch you
by surprise. (You couldn't imagine all the Pokémon
that know Thunder Wave!) DON'T LET YOUR GUARD
DOWN!!!
- All your Pokémon
will be healed completely after each battle, so don't
worry if you were hit by a Toxic attack in the last round
and you only have 1 Pokémon with only 3 HPs
left.
- When in doubt, RUN AWAY!
You'll lose the match, but you won't be humiliated with
having your best guy wiped out by, say, a Level 100
Nidoran(M) that knows Horn Drill.
- Learn to fight LONG
battles. Status attacks are your best friends in this
game.
- If you have Horn Drill,
Fissure or Guillotine, don't blow 3 rounds trying to get
it to work. Use it only once at the beginning and then
resort to regular fighting.
- Paralyze and Confuse- The
best status combo you can do, and the worst that they can
do to you.
- Only use Dragon Rage in
the Pika and Petite Cups. It only does 40 HP
damage.
- When you enter a nickname
for your Pokémon, they will change color slightly.
For instance, I named my Nidoran(M)-which is usually
pink- "SPIKE," and he turned purple. I named my
Ditto-which looks like traditional bubblegum pink-
"GOGO," and he now looks like cinnamon gum. Cool, huh? I
named my Metapod-light green- "COON," and he's neon
green. I named my peach-bellied Snorlax "CARTMAN" and he
has a lime-green stomach now. Experiment and see if you
can find some cool colors to match cool
names.
TIPS ON BEATING
MEWTWO
- Bring Electrode, Ditto,
Snorlax, your Mewtwo, and someone fast with Ice Beam or
Blizzard, like Jynx or Articuno.
- Start with Electrode. Use
a Thunder Wave, Screech as much as you can before your HP
goes yellow, then use Explosion.
- If he's not down yet, make
Ditto Transform into another Mewtwo to finish him
off.
- If that doesn't work, have
Snorlax let loose with Earthquakes and Hyper
Beams.
- If Mewtwo uses Rest, send
out your Ice user. When Mewtwo wakes up, use Ice attacks
and pray he freezes. If he does, you're home
free.
- Use your Mewtwo to
intimidate him. Actually, equip your Mewtwo with similar
attacks to his (Thunderbolt, Rest/Recover, Blizzard,
Psychic). That Mewtwo knows what he's doing.
- Once you win, the credits
roll, and ROUND 2 is unlocked.
- Repeat all steps in ROUND
2, but expect more resistance. He knows Amnesia, which
boosts his Special THROUGH THE ROOF. You're better off
using the Electrode, then the Snorlax combo.
- If you're gutsy enough,
try using Horn Drill, Fissure and Guillotine. Yes, even
Mewtwo succumbs to these attacks.

This is a tournament four wuss Pokémon like Pikachu
and Dratini. Your men must be between level 25 and 30 to
enter, plus they have to be under 6'8" and weigh less than

your arsenal. The following is a list of all Pokémon

THE HALL OF FAME
The Hall of Fame is the place where the best
Pokémon wind up. To get your Pokémon into the
Hall, just use them to win any of the cups or Gym Leader
Castle. Once you have entered all 151 Pokémon, you
will be blessed with an AMNESIA PSYDUCK. This rare
Psyduck knows Amnesia, hence its name.
