Graham
Sutherland Art Gallery, St David's,
Pembrokeshire, UK. This is an academic project in
Cardiff University, February-May 2001. The
gallery is located in St. David's, North
Pembrokeshire. North Pembrokeshire boasts mile
after mile of wild, rugged coasline. Its exposed
cliffs are blasted in winter by Atlantic storms.
The reason why I chose the site on a cliff in
Caerfai Bay is that it is the nearest beach to St
David's. It is only twenty minutes walk to the
city centre and is close to Tourist Information
Centre. There are three camp/caravan sites
nearby. This beach is popular for bathing with
residents and visitors alike. The bay is
surrounded by impressive but unstable sandstone
cliffs. There are several caves which visitors
can explore, as well as interesting rock pools.
The natural features in here can represent those
have given inspiration to the artist. Graham Sutherland,
an artist, has worked in Pembrokeshire since
1934. His landscape image especially those of sea
and wind erosion around Welsh shores, were never
factual representation, but were amalgam of
natural objects derived from a variety of sources
allowed to filter through his mind, and recreated
in the new context of composition. The gallery is
intented to accommodate his bequeathal works.
