June 16, 2005- Coming into Monday's show down between the Congress
Bulldogs (1-1) and the Jernee Dragons (0-2) both teams knew their
playoffs hopes depended on the outcome of this game but no one expected
this.
On
what was a blistering hot day with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees
the offense was just as hot making this a game of historical firsts.
For the first time ever a BFL game was played without Commissioner
Ken Goldstein in attendance and for that matter without anyone in
attendance. For the first time ever the seats at the Battlefield
were completely empty making it a surreal atmosphere for such a
pivotal game.
The battle started out with each team scoring on their first possession
and continuing the trend through the entire first quarter.
The
turning point was an interception on a tipped Jason D. pass that
Andy was able to catch and take for a touchdown. The Dragons continued
to play tough but a turnover on downs put the Dragons down by 23,
58-35 at the Half.
Then
the craziness began, barn burners, throw off returns, and quick
scoring led to a record offensive display by both teams. Both the
Bulldogs and Dragons had a good connection with Jason D, who would
go on to throw for 27 touchdowns, 2nd all time.
As
the game wore on it became quite obvious it was going to be a shoot
out, with both teams really struggling on the defensive end due
to the blazing sun and heat. Thats when it got interesting.
The strategy was to keep scoring because each player knew they would
not be able to get the defensive stop they would need, which led
to quick scores and at most 2 play drives. These factors brought
on the highest scoring 2nd halves in the history of the BFL.
The
final outcome of this battle would have the Congress Bulldogs out
shooting the Jernee Dragons 121- 105.
Notes:
-For the first time ever commissioner Ken was not at the game
-The 27 touchdown passes by Jason D. ranks 2nd behind Howie Gogo
(28)
-The 121 points scored by the Congress Bulldogs, broke the previous
record of 109 held by the Sand Storm
-The
combined 226 points was the most ever in a BFL game.
-In the 4th Quarter, the two teams did intentionally miss a handfull
of yakles, and allowed some touchdowns to increase the score resulting
in new records, which is illegal by BFL Rules. All records set in
this game will have and * next to it.
