 Sir: 

The evidence in support of your claim under the act of June 7, 1832, has been examined, and the papers are herewith returned. the following is a statement of your case in a tabular form. On comparing these papers with the following rules, and the subscribed notes, you will readily perceive that objections exist, which must be removed, before a pension can be allowed. The notes and the regulations will shew what is necessary to be done. those points which your attention is more particularly directed, you will find marked in the margin with a brace, (thus: }). You will, when you return your papers to this Department, send this printed letter with them; and you will, by compling with this request, greatly facilitate the investigation of our claim.

Charles Bratcher's Declaration  under Act of Congress passed June 7th 1833  25.967

State of Tennessee
Campbell County

On this the 13th day of June One Thousand Eight hundred and thirty three personally appeared in open court before the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of said County of Campbell now sitting. Charles Bratcher aged seventy one years who being first duly sworn according to law doth upon his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. That he entered the service of the United States in the month of June One thousand seven hundred and seventy nine to the best of his recollection as a volunteer in Captain Wiolliam Renfrows Company, Shelton Taylor Lieutenant for three months which time he served. And received a discharge signed by Shelton Tayolor, Lieutenant under whose command he was when his time expired he was stationed at Col. William flemings in Bottetourt County, Virginia to guard the Magazine. Col. William Fleming Commanded at that posting the troops while there guarding the magazine built a block house shortly after the Block house was completed his time of service expired and he returned home. He was afterwards in the month of July or August drafted for three months tour of duty from Bedford County in the State of Virginia – entered the service of the United States in Captain Jeremiah Pates Company – in the Regiment commanded by Col. Josiah Parker was first marched first to Prince Edward Court house was there stationed for several weeks – From there was marched to Richmond, Virginia a short time before Cornwallis was taken – remained at Richmond until discharged after having served three months and either nine or eleven days does not remember which. He received a discharge for the time he served as aforesaid signed by Captain Jeremiah Pate both of which discharges are lost. He states that he has no documentary evidence by which he can prove the service he performed as a soldier in the revolutionary war nor does he know of any person living by whom he can prove the whole length of time he served. 

He states that he was born in Bedford County, Virginia in the year One thousand seven hundred and sixty two the he has no record of his age. 

That he lived when called to service in Bedford County in the State of Virginia. that he removed from there to the State of Tennessee. And that he is now a Citizen of Campbell County in the State of Tennessee. That for the first tour of service he performed he was a volunteer. for the second he was drafted. That he recollects the Regimeent commanded by Col. Josiah Pates and Col. Bluford.

He refers the Court to Col. Robert Glenn, Col Robert Doak, Ladowick Moad Esq., Jon Clibow Esq., maj. Robert Smith, jacob Smith, Ali Smith and his neighbours generally as to his character fro veracity and their belief as to his service as a soldier of the revolution.

He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares his name is not on the pension roll of the Agency of any State. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid ----

We Daniel Martin & George Grimes residing in the County of Campbell aforesaid hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Charles Bratcher who has sworn to and subscribed the Above declaration that we believe him to be seventy one years of age that he is reputed and believed in the neighorhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the revolution and the we concur in that opinion.

And the said Court do hereby declare their opinions after the investigation of the matter, and after putting the interrogations prescribed by the war department that the Above applicant was a revolutionary soldier and served as he states. And the Court further certifies that it appears to them that Daniel Martin & George Grimes whos signed the preceeding certificate are resident Citizens of the Count Aforesaid. and are credible persons and that their statement is entitled to credit. The Court dispense with the certificate of a Clergyman. it appearing to their satisfaction that there is no Clergyman resident in the Neighbourhood of said Applicant to whom he could apply for the Certificate required by the war department

Campbell County Thursday. County Court, March thirteenth day of 1834. This day Nancy Bratcher personally appeared in open dourt and proved to the satisfaction of the Court by the Oath of Col. James Glenn and James Cooper that she is the Widow and relict of Charles Bratcher deceased. formerly a resident Citizen of the County of Campbell, Tennessee. and that said Charles Bratcher died on the 11th day of August 1833 and the court do certify their belief that said Nancy Bratcher is the Widow and relict of said Charles Bratcher deceased and said Col James Glenn and James Cooper are credible disinterested persons not connected with said Nancy Bratcher either by affinity or cosanguinity.
