Transgender Advocate Receives Mayor's Human Rights AwardPORTLAND, OR - In public ceremonies to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the prestigious Mayor's Human Rights Achievement Award for 2001 was presented to a Portland transgender rights advocate, Lori Buckwalter. Mayor Vera Katz, in personally presenting the award, cited Ms. Buckwalter's work on the recent changes to Portland's Civil Rights Ordinance to include gender identity protections, and her work for the rights and safety of all the citizens of Portland. Lori Buckwalter has served as the Executive Director of It's Time, Oregon!, as the co-chair of the Portland Sexual Minorities Roundtable, and as a public educator and advocate concerning gender identity and gender expression rights. Lori responded to Mayor Katz's recognition by stating, "I am deeply honored to receive this award on a day which honors the memory of Dr. King, whose dream inspires us still. I feel so fortunate to be a citizen of Portland, where leaders like Mayor Katz nurture all people's hopes to be a respected part of this city's future. I want to honor the courage of people in the transgender community, and of all those who strive to live their lives in dignity." |
