Deep-Sea Fishing
Zihuatanejo, Guerrero Mexico
(December 28, 1996 - January
02, 1997)

LEFT: One day while we were on Playa La Ropa a Mexican approached us and asked whether we'd be interested in going "deep sea" fishing. He showed us some photos from previous trips... and after a little negotiation we (Terry, Kristin & Ryan) decided to go the following morning.
We walked down to the beach at 7am to meet the boat.. a tiny
little thing w/ a "Captain" and his 14-yr old helper. After fishing for baitfish for a little while he finally gave up and purchased some bait from another boat.
RIGHT: The young Mexican
is holding the first fish that Ryan caught... a "mahi-mahi"... or, dolphin fish. It's spectacularly colored while in the water... but quickly turns an ugly gray color after it's out of the water.

LEFT: We were all surprised when a "pez vela" (sailfish) struck the line. It put up a great fight, thrashing around and coming out of the water just like on TV. It wore all of us out trying to reel it in. We weren't saavy enough to release it... they were encouraging us to have it mounted. Sure, Heather'd let me put it on the living room wall!
RIGHT: After fishing in the
morning we went to a small island for snorkeling along some coral reefs. The Captain cleaned the fish we caught and an island restaurant cooked it for us. It was the best fish we've ever eaten.
