JABAL KERAK (White, 1955). OGB White and pale lemon yellow; primuline yellow beard; dahlia purple signal patch. One of C. G. White's original fertile amphidiploidlike hybrids, a must for collectors.

jal-eff.jpg (17873 bytes)JALLAH EFFENDI (Clarence G. White, 1952). Yellow-green, red and mahogany blend, purple splashed. One of C. G. White's original fertile amphidiploidlike hybrids, a must for collectors.

JACOB'S WELL (Brizendine, 1986). OB-/OB S dark velvety brown; F dark brown; bronze brown beard. Shine Boy X (Kalifa Gulnare x Lutetia). By pedigree, this could be an ABB-type triploid or an  unbalanced halfbred with median heritage, but it's proven fertile enough I find it useful in linebreeding arilbredmedians – a rather daunting task.

jr.jpg (11767 bytes)JEAN RALLS (Hunt, 1976) OGB (Kalifa Baltis x Kalifa Gulnare) X Lahara. Gray-yellow standards; yellow-orange falls veined light maroon; dark maroon spot. Its offspring include a wondrous array of colors and forms, including some of my best pseudo-plicata patterned halfbreds.I recommend it highly, for both beginners and experimenters.Named in honor of a prominent Region 22 irisarian and friend of the hybridizer.

JEWEL OF OMAR (Boswell, 1986). OB- S medium blue, purple at base; greenish yellow styles; F medium lime-yellow, maroon-brown around violet beard. (Gingerbread Man x I. balkana) X Welcome Reward.

JEWELED VEIL (Rich, 1978). OGB+ S lavender, veined deeper; F light coppery-tan, veined and dotted maroon; black-purple signals with scattering of dots surrounding signals; bronze beard. R65-17E: (Kerr K56-4-O x Clark Seedling: (Austin OY-40 x I. susiana)) X Welcome Reward.

jv.jpg (8252 bytes)JOINT VENTURE (McAllister, 1992) OGB- Pink plicata TB sdlg X Edith Seligmann. This is a quarterbred from classic breeding, which exhibits more aril characteristics than most of its type and has proven surprisingly fertile both ways in crosses with halfbreds. Although its pods appear to have as many good seeds as those from halfbred x halfbred crosses, the germination rate of those seeds is not like that of fully fertile halfbred lines. It is more like that of wide crosses. Many of the offspring of these crosses look like halfbreds, and some of them do prove to be fully fertile. Others are clearly intermediate in appearance and prove to be chromosome-set quarterbreds. Most have more aril traits than are usually found in conventional ¼-breds. They're excellent garden subjects and bring a new dimension to the less-than-half-aril category. Some are limitedly fertile, somewhat less so that Joint Venture itself. In 1993, I got my first seedlings from Joint Venture's offspring by crossing them with tetraploid arils. Overall, the quality is superior to that of seedlings obtained from crossing TBs with tetraploid arils, and the ones I've tested have proven fertile. I've also obtained a lot of seeds by crossing Joint Venture with other quarterbreds and a few seedlings, but none of these line-bred quarterbreds have yet bloomed. Recommended for anyone who wants to produce quarterbreds with more aril traits. I made the cross in Gus Seligmann's garden. The pod parent was one of Gene Hunt's seedlings, which Gus was growing at the time as a guest. The pollen parent was one of my seedlings, which we later inadvertently registered as belonging to Gus. Doesn't "Joint Venture" seem like an accurate description?

JORDANA Onco Species. Brownish crimson self with reddish purple signal. Listed in Pleasure Iris Garden's 1999 catalog. See Onco Species poster for more information.

JUDEAN OASIS (Whitely, 1994) OGB S. white, yellow midrib; yellow style arms; F. pale yellow, small dark mahogany signal; yellow beards. Syrian Moon X V. Wood 88-10: (Onlooker x Onlooker).

JUDEAN ROUGE (Clark, 1970). Kerr's Wide Falls X (Wilkes MG26 x Sal 33:((Imam Ahmid x Kalifa Gulnare) x Imam Salah)). S clear baby ribbon pink with strong supporting midrib; F yellowish tan with brown veining and large dark brown signal spot, bronze beard. Still one of my favorite of Leo's near-arils.

JUDEAN TWILIGHT (Shockey, 1982). OH 174-11-1: (Shah Azul x (Judean Bonnet x CGW W-157)) X Aril Sanctum. S violet with darker violet-blue veining; F greyed rosy violet with very fine darker veining, dark greyed maroon half-moon signal; white and grey-maroon beard.

JUST FOR JAN (Hunt, 1987) OGB Esther the Queen X (Imam Salah x Beisan Aga). Ivory-yellow standards, greyed-yellow falls; yellow-orange beard. Greyed-purple signal. Pronounced spicy fragrance. A good parent for yellows with dark signals. Its seeds germinate more readily than those of most halfbreds so I tend to use it as the pod parent. I recommend it highly for beginners. Jan is the type of friend and neighbor most people only dream of having. Her way of coping with the "empty nest" syndrome was to keep busy. Fortunately for me, this happened at the same time I brought Gene's selected seedlings to New Mexico to increase and introduce. Time and again I'd get home from work to find that weeds had "mysteriously" disappeared from the garden. This was her favorite of all of his seedlings, so I named it for her.
