4.2: Life cycle
This is another contribution from systemic family therapy.
It considers the family as a living system that is born, grows up and dies.
The same family is not always identical, it changes throughout its evolution,
and as it goes through different stages, it also performs different tasks.
The practical use of this concept is helping the
mediator to understand which tasks are usually expected by society for
a family to perform according to its evolutive cycle.
It is extremely useful for young mediators who sometimes
would seem not to understand certain issues.
I have chosen two life cycles belonging to different
authors:
a) the traditional
life cycle (Haley, Minuchin, Erickson,
etc.)
and b) the new life cycle
(Steinglass).
