FAMILY MEDIATION:DE-CONSTRUCTION of a COMPLEXITY by Marinés Suares

8.1: In our country: Argentina

The mediation institution

The mediation institution is completely new among us.

The work in community centers and the good results accomplished have contributed greatly to its propagation. But we are still far away from having a culture that has acquired this new way of dispute resolution.

Family
In our country, there are many different kinds of families; this is partly due to the fact that we are "a melting pot".

Our population has various roots:

a) Aboriginal populations of America, that in the case of the Southern part of the Continent, never got to constitute a unique or prevailing culture, as in the case of the Incas, Mayas or Aztecas. These lands were inhabited by a multiplicity of groups with very different cultures and social structures. The differences between Mapuches and Guaraníes, just to give two examples, are very deep.

b) The Spanish "settlement" came, among other things, with all their habits, myths and beliefs. The Spaniards, mixed with the aboriginal populations, gave birth to our "criollo" (creole), who had to make, as far as he was able to, such different ancestries compatible.

c) The migratory currents of the late last century, mainly Spanish and Italians, and the migratory currents that came after the two wars, with a strong Jewish migratory current, but also an Italian and Saxon one, besides the Japanese, came to make the perspective even more complex. Each of these currents brought, sometimes without noticing it, in an invisible way, their own ideas of family, which they tried to reproduce here. Currently, the Korean community has also arrived in our country, bringing about changes in their attempt to actively adapt to this society so different from their own society.

Besides, we must not forget that our vast country is known for having two very different kinds of population: the urban and the rural ones. Furthermore, there are major differences between the population of the Federal Capital and that of the urban areas of the inner country. Life in Castelar, just twenty kilometers away from the Federal Capital, is absolutely different from the life there. The social networks, the neighbors, the intermediate institutions, etc, play a specific role in the lives of the suburban and rural families, and they can also work as prompts.

All this leads us to realize that when we talk about family with other Argentineans, we are probably talking about different structures, with different myths, different values and different ways of putting them into practice, and that this will depend on their ancestral family histories.

When I say myths, I do it bearing in mind the importance that they have in the conformation of subjectivity. Myths are not something that is out there, but they are part of our inner selves, and by not analyzing them we reproduce and transmit them to the people with whom we share our life, and above all, to our children. Myths are live myths, they are conceptions that constitute us and grow within ourselves and we, either consciously or not, reproduce them by transmitting them.
