Introduction to Web Authoring Tools

<html> tools

You will need:

  • Access to the Internet with a computer. Perhaps you are using a computer at home. You can also use the computers in the multimedia laboratory at Ohlone College, in room 4110 at the Fremont campus. That laboratory is open Monday through Friday from 9a.m. to 8:45 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The laboratory at the Newark campus in room 4 is open Wednesday evenings from 5 to 9 p.m. If you need a multimedia student identification card to use the labs email the instructor.

  • An email address where you can receive mail. Yahoo, Hotmail, Netscape are among the many companies offering free mail service, if you do not already have an address.

  • Browsing software, which you already have if you are looking at this page. If possible, you will want to have more than one browser, so that you can check your pages with both the Microsoft Explorer and Netscape, for example. The instructor will also be viewing your work with Opera and a text-based browser such as Lynx. Web pages often display quite differently on the various browsers.

  • A web site. If your internet service provider does not give you web space with your email account, free web space is available from Webprovider, Geocities, Xoom and Angelfire. You can also check this list of servers offering free web space. One of the first assignments will be to set up a site and send the URL address to the instructors.

  • Access to The Palace chat room. You can arrange to meet your instructor or other students in the Ohlone online chat room at The Palace for real-time discussions. Please download the free Palace program to make access easier although it will work without the program on your computer. The Ohlone chat room is at http://chalon.ohlone.cc.ca.us:9990

  • The preferred text for this class is Raggett on HTML 4 (second edition), ISBN 0-201-7805-2. However, if you prefer to use HTML 4 for the World Wide Web by Elizabeth Castro. Berkeley, California: Peachpit Press, 1998. ISBN 0-201-69696-7, that is also acceptable. The books are described in the readings link below. Look through the texts and select the one that appeals to you.

You will not need:

  • Exepensive web authoring programs such as FrontPage, PageMill, Dreamweaver, GoLive, nor the free programs such as Netscape Composer. In this class you will code your pages from scratch. Later we will evaluate these web authoring programs, but it is not necessary to have them.
