Atrocities Committed in Colombia involving School of the Americas Graduates



  • 1982. Muerte a Secuestradores (MAS -- "Death to kidnappers") a paramilitary death squad responsible for numerous assassinations and disappearances. Principal members included Maj. Alejandro de Jesus Alvarez Henao (1984, Joint Operations); LTC Virgilio Anzola Montero (1967, Cadet Orientation Course). Maj Julio Elias Barrera Bustos (1982 Joint Operations Course) protected and aided MAS. Col Jaime Alberto Escobar Garzón (1981, Command and General Staff College) and 1 Lt Jorge Gonzalez were implicated in activities associated with MAS. General Ramón Emilia Gil Bermúdez established, protected, and participated in activities of the rightest death squad "MAS." General Gil had taken Maintenance Orientation in 1969. Following involvement in the death squad activities, General Gil was brought back to the School of the Americas as a guest speaker in 1988. Colombian attorney general named Captain Carlos Hugo Ramirez Zuluaga and Maj Luis Fernando Ricardo Perdomo. as one of several Army officers who were part of the death Squad MAS. In 1983 the Colombian attorney general named Gen. Luis Alvaro Rodriquez Fontecha before as member. Investigations by the attorney general and others indicated that Captain Marco Antonio Salazar Duque (1976, Small Unit Infantry Tactics) particiapted in the military/paramilitary death squad MAS, and was personally responsible for the assassination of at least one individual. Col. Victor Manuel Trujillo Hoyos protected and aided MAS while assigned to the Fifth Brigade.
  • 1984-5. Muerte a Secuestradores (MAS -- "Death to kidnappers"). General Farouk Yanine Diaz as implicated in paramilitary activities associated with the death squad MAS.
  • 1986, Ramírez massacre. 6 individuals were murdered, 4 of whom were tortured from the home of the Ramírez family. Captain Delma William Alba Rincóon (1984, Cadet Arms Orientation Course). 1 Lt Luis Enrique Andrade Ortiz was one of the officers in charge of military/paramilitary soldiers who broke into the home of the Ramirez family, killed two members outright, and captured 4 others, whose bodies were found later with signs of torture. Captain Jairo John Uribe Cardenas was immplicated in the murder of 2 members of the Ramirez family, and the torture and murder of 4 others.
  • 1987-90. Muerte a Secuestradores (MAS). LTC Carlos Eduardo Davila Romero (1967, Cadet Orientation Course) was involved with paramilitary death squads including MAS, at times aided by Israeli mercenaries, in 1987. General Hernan Jose Guzman Rodriquez (1969, Maintenance Orientation, 1993, SOA Hall of Fame) protected and aided paramilitary death squad MAS between 1987 and 1990, when it was responsible for the deaths of at least 149 people. Maj. Luis Fernando Madrid Baron (1978, Small Unit Tactics), implicated in the activities of MAS and cited as intellectual author ofr many of these assassinations..
  • 1988. Segovia Massacre, in which 43 unarmed people including several children were killed in the early evening in a central park in the town of Segovia. SOA graduates implicated included Captain Gilberto Alzate Alzate (1983, Cadet Arms Orientation Course); Major Luis Roberto Garcia Ronderos (1983, Patrol Operations); 1 LT Edgardo Hernandez Navarro; General Raul Rojas Cubillos (1971, Special Maintenance Orientation); Captain Luis Fernando Rojas Espinoza (1984, Cadet Arms Orientation Course); 1 Lt Carlos Eduardo Santacruz Estrada (1983, Cadet Arms Orientation); Captain Hugo Alberto Valencia Vivas (1980, Cadet Arms Orientation Course).
  • 1989. Massacre of a judicial commission. 1 Lt Luis Enrique Andrade Ortiz (1983, Cadet Arms Orientation Course) is believed to be the intellectual author of the paramilitary massacre of 12 officials, including 2 judges, who were investigatging military/paramilitary cooperation,
  • 1990. 11 campesinos murdered by troops under the command of 1LT Pedro Nei Acosta Gaivis (1986, Cadet Arms Orientation Course. Following the murders, Acosta has his men dress the corpses like guerrilla forces and then dismissed the killings as an armed confrontation between the Army and guerrilas.
