Loial

Loial son of Arent son of Halan is a rarity among the Ogier.  Most Ogier are content to live in their stedding, studying books and living peacefully.  Loial was not satisfied with this lifestyle, though, as he desired to go Outside.  In fact, he wanted to go Outside so badly that he essentially ran away from Stedding Shangtai.  Ogier are not allowed to leave the stedding until they are at least one hundred years old, and Ogier elders would consider Loial no more than a child.

Loial spent time traveling the land, visiting ancient cities and the Ogier groves which some still contained.  Loial was saddened as he realized how many of the groves had been destroyed, and how few people even remembered the Ogier themselves.  Like all his kind, Loial has a great love of trees.  Additionally, he is a talented Treesinger, a gift which has become rare among the Ogier.

When Loial left the stedding, he went seeking adventure and knowledge.  And he found ample amounts of both when he met Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn.  He fell in with Rand’s company, and his extensive knowledge of ancient lore has been a great help to Rand.  Loial is extremely well read, and he can seldom be found without a book in his hands.

Loial claims that he is hasty by Ogier standards, but he is steady as a rock in comparison to the human race.  Loial has also proved the old adage that the Ogier are fearsome enemies when roused.  He dislikes killing anything, even Trollocs and other Shadowspawn, but his great strength and size make him a formidable enemy.

Loial continues to serve Rand in various ways.  Since joining Rand and his friends, Loial has changed quite a bit.  He now has almost grown to like adventure and danger.  Perhaps it is not surprising, given the Ogier nature, that Loial intends to write a book about his adventures with the Dragon Reborn.
