Employment Tips

One of the biggest tips I can share it’s a quote that my instructor shared with my class during career development training, which was “Failure to prepare is preparing for failure.”
This is so true. It is very important to always be prepared in order to be successful during your search for employment. Be prepared by having an updated copy of your resume, references and a copy of a portfolio of yourself. What is a portfolio? you might ask. This is a binder that includes copies of your achievements, awards, letters of recommendation, references, updated resume and any other information that will show the employer that you are strong candidate and a competent one. This is a great tool that we all should compile to facilitate presenting our qualifications and skills. Employers love to see what we have accomplished and are able to do.
Practice your interviewing skills! Role-playing with a friend, spouse or even yourself by standing in front of a mirror will certainly help you. Constructive criticism from them will be very helpful.
One other area that we always forget to expand on, is our network. Our network is anyone that you know from friends, neighbors, past co-workers, church etc. These are people that we have had some type of interaction with and can help us by connecting us with possible opportunities of employment that they might come across. Because they know us, they can refer us very easily to others.
Last but not least, keeping a positive attitude throughout your search will allow you to stay focused, and project yourself well in front of an employer. Besides, this is one of the qualities an employer is always looking for. Thinking outside the box will help you to look at other opportunities that you might not otherwise consider. Do not get discouraged, keep your eye on your goal and following the above tips will help you be successful in your job search. Good luck!
