Inspiration
comes from the strangest of places, including chain
letters
apparently.
One of
the strangest and most requested songs these days
is "Everybody's
Free (To Wear Sunscreen)," a song that previously got
heavy
rotation as a chain e-mail. The e-mail claimed to carry a
commencement
address delivered by "Slaughterhouse Five" author Kurt
Vonnegut.
The fact of the matter is that the life lessons offered in
the e-mail
first appeared in a 1997 column by "Chicago Tribune"
writer
Mary Scmich.
The passage
has now been set to a languid hip-hop soundtrack by
director
Baz Luhrmann, the man behind "Strictly Ballroom" and the
Leonardo
DiCaprio/Claire Danes remake of "Romeo And Juliet."
While
Luhrmann put the track together, he is not the song's narrator;
the mystery
man is an Australian actor named Lee Perry.
Ben Folds Five: Brick (midi available)
This song is from the album Whatever and Ever Amen. It is one of my favourite songs because it sounds so sad and expresses so much emotion...the following is from the magazine, Teen People(april 1998)
"People ask all the time what this song is about, and I usually don't tell them," says Ben Folds, lead singer of Ben Folds Five, about the third single from Whatever and Ever Amen. "Basically, the girl in the song is a highschooler going to get an abortion, and it's told from the boyfriend's perspective. I didin't want to make it an issue song or to take a stance in any way. The fact is, [abortion} happens, and it's a really tough thing for a teenager--male or female--to go through. It's not something that's really talked about much. It's expressed in statistics, but I'm sure that with most girls who go through it at school, friends don't even know. I wanted to show that the way [this experience] affects the guy is a little different. I don't meet many guys who will sit on your couch and break down and cry. So I wanted the lyrics to be deadpan. But the song should imply that there's a lot of feeling. The word numb is in there, because that's usually how guys tend to react when hit with too much emotion."
Says drummer Darren Jessee, "I wrote the chorus and handed it off to Ben to finish. To me, the brick image was about a guy who really cared for a girl in a relationship that wasn't going well. In other words, she was pulling him down like a brick. Then Ben wrote the lyrics, and the image took on a different meaning."
I think we all can relate to this song.
No Matter What by Boyzone (midi available)

i'm not exactly a britney spears
fan. Her songs are ok though. It's not like she wrote them though.
She just performs. And I could care less about her and her rumoured
boob job.
