Abstract

A survey on tree species planted in urban areas was carried out on six selected areas. Comparison was made among three categorized areas namely the golf courses, parks and gardens, and residential areas in and around Kuala Lumpur. Each category is further divided into two classes that are older and relatively recent areas. The objectives were to species composition in each areas and stand structure for the purpose of determining the pattern of planting. The stand composition including number of trees, sizes and maturity were determined. The findings indicate a total of 121 species planted from 38 families in all the six areas. The five common species are Fragraea fragrans, Pterocarpus indicus, Acacia auriculaeformis, Cinnamomum iners and Pelthophorum pterocarpum that comprised approximately 50% of the total tree population. The structure and composition of tree population in these areas were determined by a complete tree survey. As compared to other areas, Taman Tasik Perdana have more numbers of species (77), followed by Royal Selangor Golf Course, which has 72 species and Section 17, Petaling Jaya with a number of 70 species. The findings also indicate that the older category of the golf courses, parks and gardens, and residential areas consistently comprised more variation in stand structure and species composition as compared to the younger category areas. This is so because this category of area has been established much earlier and the program of planting is still continue. The recently established areas show an even growth in terms of age and size, and generally composed of less number of species as compared to the older sites of the same category. Younger areas tend to have faster growing species.
