A study was conducted on the three zones of Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur to determine the Green Space Index and their distribution. The study was conducted with the use of aerial photos, base maps, green space maps, and projected population maps. A total of three planning units namely, the Central Planning Area (Zone 1), Planning Unit Bukit Jalil (Zone 2), and Planning Unit Maluri (Zone 3) were selected for this purpose. The analysis of data was based on several criteria, which include the land area of each planning unit, area of green space, types and distribution of green space and the total of existing and projected population for each planning unit together with their distribution. The results show that 324 ha (18%) of the Central Planning Area, 113 ha (76%) of the Planning Unit Bukit Jalil and 57 ha (12%) of the Planning Unit Maluri are occupied with green space. The Green Space Index (GSI) for the year 1990, 1995, and 2000 for the Central Planning Area is 1.16, 0.93, and 0.74 respectively. As for the Planning Unit Maluri, the GSI is 1.00, 0.77, and 0.57 respectively. The GSI of Planning Unit Maluri are lower when compared to the standard GSI of 1.60 and 2.00 ha per 1000 population, except for the Planning Unit Bukit Jalil with GSI of 125.11, 111.35, and 101.22. On the contrary, the GSI for these three study area are higher (GSI = 4.33, 3.44, 2.71). Overall, the distribution of green space and population are imbalanced. However, a total of 125 targets and four proposed sites were recognized to have the potential to be preserved and expanded for the purpose of increasing green space. These targets and proposed sites are considered to be suitable for birds and wildlife habitat, nature conservation, research, education, and community involvement.
