Fancy Rulers and Scissors
Scrapbooking
- Keep track of what scissors, rulers and corner punches you have by cutting pieces of cardstock into approximately 3 inch squares. Cut the corners and edges using a separate card for each of the scissors and punches.
By holding them up against each other you can see how they will look in combination with each other. Remember to include your corner rounder as an example as well. Write the name and manufacturer of each punch and scissors on the back of each card.
When you are going shopping, take these sample cards along and you will know exactly what you have at home.
By keeping a ziplock bag of corner samples that can be used in a mix-and-match fashion, you are unlikely to forget about the possibilities of your corner scissors and punches.
- Numerous sources say that you really shouldn't overdue cutting photos with fancy-edged scissors. Try just cutting one edge - either just the top or just the bottom edge. Then mat the photo with colored or patterned paper, cutting the same edge of the mat with the same scissors. It is a more understated look.
- To keep ink from smearing when you are using a borderline ruler or a template, lift them off the page by attaching a few felt pieces to the underside of the ruler or template with glue.
- If you want to use one piece of patterned paper on a two-page spread, cut the page in half diagonally and put half on each page, placing one piece at the top left corner of one page and the other at the bottom right of the second page. It will pull the pages together.
- If you are planning to use fancy scissors for cutting the same design
for one or more layers, trim the smallest layer to a little larger than
the size you want. Cut it first with chosen scissors. Second, cut the next
layer to appropriate size, mount the smaller design on it , then cut the
second larger layer aligning the scissors to match the first design.
Repeat for multiple layers. This is much easier than cutting the largest
first then trying to eyeball or mark the smaller layer.
- Use fancy edged rulers to make 2-3 inch borders on one side out of patterned paper,
i.e. the rose patterned paper for Mother's Day.
- By turning the patterned scissors around you will get complete different
look. Try cutting a 1" strip of paper with scissors one direction and on
other side of paper turn the scissors other direction.
- Cropping photos with a lot of different edging scissors can seem too
much. Scrapbook pages look better and more understated when using
edging scissors on mounts behind the photos. Cut the photos in
a basic shape (ie. ovals, circles, squares).
