AHHHHHHH, the Koala. Let me guess this was the first page you came to. I don't blame you they are so cute and cuddly and the first thing that everyone thinks of when you mention Australia. First let me dispel a few myths about koalas. They are not bears! They are a marsupial and raise thier young in a pouch. Cute yes, cuddly well; they can be quite aggressive and vicious if they want to be. Their claws are as long and sharp as eagle talons and they do bite trust me I know. One of the little guys I was lucky enough to get to hold decided he liked my finger and I wasn't about to argue with him. Many people think that they would make great pets well here are a few facts about koalas. In Australia to have a koala you must own 1000 acres of euchalyptis trees per breeding pair of koala. The branchs must be cut fresh each day and kept in water for them to eat. Our local zoo has 3 Victorian koalas on exhibit here and it costs $15,000 per year per koala to feed. Fresh leaves must be flown in from Florida on a weekly basis. Koalas sleep on average about 19 hours a day and that doesnt leave much time for anything else.
