First you need a friend. You are player 1 and your friend is player 2. Let's say you picked and have a Charmander at the beginning of your game. Player 1 needs to get 2 Pokémon he doesn't want. When he's done, Player 2 starts a new game a pick a Squirtle. Now both players go to a Pokémon Center and Player 1 trades one Pokémon he doesn't like for Player 2's Squirtle. When the trade is complete Player 2 turns off his new game. Player 1 saves his game. Now player 2 starts a new game again and chooses Balbasaur. They trade again and then Player 2 turns of his game. Player 1 saves his game, and now Player 1 has all the starting Pokémon! You can do this again just switch the players to give your friend all starting Pokémon! Now, Player 1 doesn't need to start a new game, he can just continue his. And starting a new game won't erase your saved game unless you save on it. So you lose nothing!
