Bosses

I've played SotN so much, I learned little tricks of the trade for defeating the various bosses.......so I wrote a walkthrough of every boss fight. In each fight, I listed what to do, and sometimes what not to do. WARNING: If you don't want to spoil things for yourself, and want to try to beat the bosses for yourself, read no further! If you have any questions about the bosses that aren't answered here, feel free to E-mail me at annmage@aol.com.

1. Slogra & Gaibon:
To start out, you'll need the axe subweapon, a Short Sword, and the Leather Shield. First, roam around the beginning part of the castle even before you go and meet Death. Kill the Wargs there, and get several levels up, so that you have at least 60 hearts, and 85 HP or so. Even if you manage to start Al out with 50 hearts and 80 HP, get at least 5 levels up to increase your strength.
Once Alucard is up this far, proceed to the boss room, grabbing the axe on the way. Then, whenever Gaibon either is flying directly over Slogra, or he picks Slogra up, hit 'em with axes. Whenever Gaibon picks Slogra up, run under them, so Slogra drops down behind Al. Beware of stray fireballs from Gaibon......this is where your shield comes in handy. If you did things right, Slogra will be dead by the time you run out of hearts/axes. Gaibon should of also turned red at this point, and will be spitting HUGE fireballs. When he stands on the ground and lets out a whole mess of these out, simply crouch near him and hit him with your sword. The fireballs sail right over Al's head. Simple fight.

2. Doppledanger10:
Make sure you have a short sword and a shield handy, and that you are at least at level 11 (since this boss is at level 10). Then, all you do is go up to Doppledanger and jump away from him. He'll jump after Al, so turn around in mid-air and hit him with your sword. Just keep on doing this......jump, turn, slash. Get it? When on the ground, hold up your shield because Doppledanger will fling daggers at you....and sometimes will even turn into a bat and do wing smash (I don't know why, since the Soul of Bat relic isn't available until later in the game). If he does this, either jump or duck, and he'll zoom right by.

3. Hippogryph:
This isn't a hard boss. First of all, be sure to bring holy water with you. Whenever the hippogryph settles down on the ground either to blow fire or to lay eggs, throw holy water on it, and evade the fire by pressing the "scoot" or "evade" button (y'know, the triangle button). Whenever it charges, jump over it and if it lays eggs, destroy those. They obviously hatch into baby hippogryphs, and although I never let them hatch, I'm sure they can harm Alucard in some way. Just be sure not to get run over by the beast, and you'll do just fine.

4. Scylla:
Bring whatever subweapon you want, because you most likely won't use it. To beat the Wyrm, just hit it with your sword.....DUH. Then hurry through the rising water room, because at this point water can hurt Al. Once you get to Scylla, kill the Wyrms right away, jumping over the sickles and bubbles when they fly at you (this is harder than it sounds). Once you beat the Wyrms, simply go right up to Scylla, and jump behind her. Yeah, you'll get hurt for running into her, but once behind her, she can't harm you. Just hit her back with your sword......simple as that.

5. Minataur & Werewolf:
Not much advice for this one, because there isn't any neat trick you can pull. First, dispose of the Werewolf, because his attacks are stronger and quicker (and the Minataur can throw him at you). Then get rid of the Minataur. Jump whenever they charge, and be ready to jump away from the Werewolf's "flame punch" on the ground. Don't get caught in the Minataur's breath when he blows at you, or you'll get poisoned (bad case of halitosis?). Once time, I managed to get stuck at the staircase to the left, crouching down and facing to the left with the two beasts directly behind me. They couldn't harm me there for some reason, and even though Al wasn't facing them, I just swung my sword repeatedly, and killed them both in no time flat. I haven't managed to do this again, and I don't know how I did it in the first place......so good luck trying. Kudos to you if you manage to pull it off.

6. Karasuman:
Real simple......when he jumps up into the air the first time, jump and hit him with your sword. Then do it again, immediatly. Then again. Done right, he never lands or tries any fancy attacks, because each time you hit him, he freezes for a moment, completely defenseless. A quick fight......this one should take less than 30 seconds, no bull!

7. Succubus:
Okay, fighting this chick is fun. Don't bother with subweapons, unless you really love those things. Just keep hitting her with your weapon of choice (the Damascus Sword if fairly effective at this point), and whenever she shoots spines out of her wings, stand directly beneath her and she can't harm you. When she does the "duplication" trick, simply turn into a bat and wing smash across the screen until you hit her. Just a little side note: ....is it me, or is the female vocalist in the boss music here the voice of the Succubus herself? Hmm....

8. Cerberus:
This doggie isn't that hard. Bring holy water with you, and be sure to have plenty of hearts. Then, stand on the ledges above Cerberus, and drop holy water on him whenever he's holding still in one spot (usually when he's shooting the diagonal fireballs). If he jumps and you're on a ledge, drop down and he'll jump over you. If you're on the ground, run towards him and he'll do the same thing. If you want to be fancy, you can start out the battle with magic like Tetra Spirit or Soul Steal. However, I wouldn't use too much magic before this point in the game, because the more magic Al uses, the higher his intelligence gets, and the lower his overall strength will be. This can affect you later in the game, so in short: don't waste magic.

9. Olrox:
For this battle, you will need holy water, a one-handed sword/weapon, and the Herald Shield. This shield is a very important element, as you'll see. Start out by dropkicking onto Olrox's table, because this breaks it. This serves no real purpose, but it sure looks cool. Just hit Olrox whenever he flies overhead, or when he stands on the ground and tries magicky stuff. If your levels are where they should be when you fight this boss (I suggest at least lvl 17), he'll change into that big green thing before he pulls off any fancy magic. Once he turns into the Jolly Green Giant, pelt him with holy water and hit him with your sword. If he corners you, simply turn into a bat and wing smash into him, and you'll end up behind him. When he does that high-pitched fire thing, just scoot backwards away from it, or double-jump over it. When he shoots plain fireballs, crouch and hold up the shield until he's done doing so. But wait......you get hearts too! There's no way you'll run out of holy water now. Even if you do all these tricks, this is still a long boss fight....but it's a fairly easy one none the less. Side note: Alucard can sit in Olrox's chair until it's destroyed. This serves no purpose, but it's kind of a silly thing to do in a boss fight. Also, Olrox has a voice, says "Take that!" and "Have at you!" sometimes, and is obviously talking to Alucard before he decides to stand up and fight.....so why isn't there another dialogue bit? I imagine whatever Olrox and Al say to each other is interesting, but I guess Konami didn't think it was important enough to be heard. Oh well.

10. Grantfaloon:
The EASIEST boss fight, if done right. First, equip the Skull Sheild in one hand, and the Shield Rod in the other. Then, turn into a bat, fly over to the second ledge on the left side, the one parallel with Grantfaloon's center. Then just use the Skull Shield's Shield Rod power (square + circle simultaneously), sit back, and watch the fire works baby. If you want to be stupid and drag out this boss fight (although why anyone would want to do this is beyond me), then destroy all the outer layers of the monster first, and then attack the center part last. This is a stupid thing to do, because once the layers of bodies are all gone, Grantfaloon will shoot lasers all over the place, and these are very hard to evade, making it even tougher to attack the monster. So I don't recommend this approach. Stick to the Skull Shield trick instead.

11. Richter Belmont:
Now, there are three ways to fight Richter, two of them kill them, and all three will eventually result in three different endings.
The first way: Killing Richter without the Holy Glasses.
Equip the Mormegil and try to have a familiar that loves to attack things, like the Bat or the Demon. You don't really have to worry about subweapons, but if you'd prefer to use one, fine with me...it's your game. When Richter does "Holy Cross", turn into mist so it won't harm Al. Do the same thing when he does Hydro Storm. When you attack, dodge out right away, because Richter can use the axe, the cross, and the holy water against you, not to mention some of his special moves (like that spinny charge thing). You should kill him in no time, and then that's the end of the game.
The second way: Killing Richter with the Holy Glasses.
First, equip the Holy Glasses. Then, just do the same as you would without the glasses, being sure not to attack the green orb that flies around over Richter. You get a different ending this time, but the game still ends none the less.
The third way: Save Richter with the Holy Glasses.
First, equip the Holy Sword, and be sure to either have no familiar at all, or the sucky Faerie familiar. That way, you won't have your familiars attacking Richter. Bring the axe along with you, but don't use it, because you'll need it in the next boss fight. Once again, equip the Holy Glasses. Then, after evading the Holy Cross by turning to mist, attack that green orb above Richter's head, making sure not to accidentally hit him. Even if you do hit him, it won't hurt him as much, because you're using the Holy Sword. You'll break the spell Shaft cast on Richter, and then you'll go into a dialogue sequence......and hearing Alucard's voice is always cool. A side note on that: Did you know that the same Voice Actor that does the voice of Alucard (Robert Belgrande), also does the voice of Magnito on the show "X-Men"? And in the Japanese version, the same Voice Actor for Alucard also does the voice of Jotaro from the anime "Jo Jo's Bizzare Adventure". Way cool.

12. Darkwing Bat:
This thing is annoying (and it's name reminds me of the show "Darkwing Duck"), so you'll want to get rid of it fast. Be sure to bring the axe along. If you didn't bring it with you, teleport back to the first castle, and then go get it from the Castle Keep (it's at the very top right corner of the main screen for that area.).
Start out with Soul Steal, because this will weaken the bat a lot. Then remain under it at ALL TIMES, and nail it with axes. If you don't remain under it (more specifically, under it's rear end), it'll create a gust of wind with its wings and send Alucard flying back into the wall. This not only hurts Al, but it's kinda hard to attack when you're plastered to a wall, and this leaves Alucard defenseless momentarily......meaning that the the bat can charge at him. Just kill it as soon as you can, and you won't have to worry about this.

13. Akamodan II:
Just equip the Axe Lord Armor (which you should of got from doing the "bopping the Librarian off the floor" thing), and hit the mummy repeatedly with the axe (not the subweapon). None of the poisonous gas will seep out to harm you. It's as simple as that. Or you could just use the Crissaegrim (which you get from killing Shmoos in the upside-down Library), which kills him in a second, and its long each allows you to kill him from a distance, away from the gas.

14. Medusa:
For an easy win, use the Crissaegrim and she'll die in about 2 seconds. If you don't have this sword (for shame!), then bring along holy water, and be sure to equip the Medusa Shield......she can't turn you to stone when you have it equipped. All you do is simply crouch next to her and hit her with your sword. She can't hit you with her eye beams or her sword if you crouch like this. When she does hold still, chuck some holy water on her. You'll finish her off in no time.

15. The Creature:
You won't need any subweapons for this, but I suggest you bring along a fairly strong sword (the famed Crissaegrim works nicely). What to do here is simple: just go up and attack the monster. When he says "eeeerrrr!!" and raises his hammer, just scoot backwards so he won't hit you with it. Dodge in again, hit him, and if he yells and raises his hammer again, just scoot back again. If he starts to roll, this is somewhat beneficial. When he rolls towards Al, simply jump over him and hit him with your sword as he rolls away. This takes a while, but you won't get hurt if you time things right. If you do have the Crissaegrin, just go right up to the brute and attack him with it repeatedly. After about 2 seconds of hitting him with this sword, he's as good as dead.

16. Death:
I always save right before this one and reset the game after I beat it just to hear the dialogue again (good writing, but Death sounds like he needs a Sucrets) and to beat Death again because he's so EASY! At this point, you should have at least one Ring of Varda, so put that on (or two if you have 'em). The easy way that I beat Death is I simply use the Crissagrim, hit Death about 5 times with it (which takes like, a second), he changes form, I hit him a few more times, and BOOM: that's all! But if you didn't get this sword for any reason, then the Holy Sword works nicely too. The Alucard Shield (after pulling the Shield Rod combo with it) kills him in even less time than the Crissaegrim, so can you use that if you're willing to jump up to hit him with it.

17. Doppledanger40:
Hmm......this guy looks familiar. Once again, equip a shield (if you got it, the Alucard Shield), and hold it up constantly. This time, you'll have the Ring of Varda, and that'll help this fight go faster. Keep ready to change to mist, because this Doppledanger can do wing smash and wolf charge. The tactic here is the same as the level 10 Doppledanger: Jump, turn, slash, jump, turn, slash. Although I use the Crissaegrim, it really doesn't matter what sword you use, because you only get one hit in at a time. Just be sure to use a strong one-handed sword so you can also use a shield.

18. Trevor, Grant, & Sypha:
I never really liked this boss fight, even though I love CV3. Yup, these zombies take the forms of Alucard's old allies in hopes to play mind games with him. Too bad it doesn't seem to work. Once again, equip that pretty Ring of Varda, and the lovely Crissaegrim, and the Alucard Shield if you have it at this point. ::sighs::Once again, if you don't have the Crissaegrim (and if this is true, then I bop you for your shame ::whap::), then use a nice powerful sword. The Alucard Sword is pretty cool, and the Holy Sword seems to work well here. Then once all the problems of equipping have been resolved, take out Grant first, because he'll drop knives on you. Then get rid of Trevor (or "Ralph", as he is sometimes called), being sure not to get hit by his whip or holy water. Lastly, take care of Sypha, who's spells are somewhat weenieish. She can bring the Trevor zombie partially back to life, but odds are you'll finish her off before she tries this.

19. Beezlebub:
All I gotta say is EW. This boss is DISGUSTING, but you have to beat him. First, equip the Topaz Circlet so you'll get healed by the maggots instead of poisoned. Then equip the Ring of Varda, and the Crissaegrim or the Holy Sword. Then all you have to do is hack at the monster and avoid the HY-00GE flies as best you can. This is sometimes harder than it sounds, but not too tough if you're using one of these two swords (especially the Crissaegrim). First, attack Beezlebub's legs, and then his arms (you'll have to do the super jump to reach the top half of him). Then attack his center. I used the Crissaegrim, and I beat this gross bad guy in less than a minute, so I really suggest you get this sword! (Eh, what can I say, I'm a Crissaegrim pusher)

20. Galamoth:
This guy has to be the hardest boss in the game....he even has more HP than Dracula himself! But he's not a toughie, if you do things right. First, be sure to wear the Beryl Circlet, so you'll be healed by his lightning attacks. Secondly, equip the Alucard Shield (this is a must!), and use the Shield Rod combo with it just before you enter the boss' room. It really doesn't matter what weapon you equip in the other hand, because you aren't going to use it anyway. Then all you have to do is go right up to the brute and actually run into him while holding up the Alucard Shield. If he shoots those black lightning balls, just either turn into mist or run back towards the left to evade them. If this happens, then once he stops shooting those things, go and run into him with your shield again. Even though the Alucard Shield has a very powerful attack to it, it'll take about a minute of ramming Galamoth with your shield before he dies.

21. Shaft:
The second last boss fight and the cause of a few minor problems (like brainwashing Richter), Shaft was fairly disappointing. Not only that, but his voice bothered me more than Death's. The only thing I really liked about this boss fight is hearing Alucard talk. Anyway, I just used the Crissaegrim, hit him maybe 8 times with it, and then he was as good as dead. The Alucard Shield works well, too.

22. Lord Dracula:
There are so many ways people can beat Dracula......I've heard people make all sorts of complicated suggestions, but people don't seem to use the tactic that is painfully obvious: The Alucard Shield. Well, doy! It's obvious by the end of the game that this thing packs a whallop, so why would you not want to use it? All you have to do is hold it up, and you'll not only hit Drac (sometimes you'll have to jump to reach him, though), but he also can't whack you with his claws when you're holding this shield up to him for some odd reason. In a few seconds (no bull!), Dracula stops attacking, we have another cool dialogue sequence, and then that's the end of the game. Now that wasn't too hard, was it? :)
Now, if you want to drag this fight out, and to make it funny, just do the drop kick on Dracula's head repeatedly. This is funny because Al is killing his daddy by bouncing off of him! Woo-hoo! But this takes longer, and you'll have to go to mist sometimes to evade Drac's attacks. If you wear two Rings of Varda, this fight will zip by even faster.
