Everything you ever wanted to know about the GBC

GBC Review
A few days after I found out the GBC's release date, I went on down to my local EB store to pre-order my Game Boy! Well, it seemed to take forever, even though it was less than a month, but I finally got... "The Call" :)

The first thing I did when I got it was put in an oldie but goodie, and one of my favorite games, Super Mario land. I used the Default color palette because it seemed to be the most fitting. I couldn't beleive my eyes! I thought to myself, if an old game looks this good, what's a new one going to look like? Exit Mario, enter Game and watch gallery 2. That completely blew me away!

Now, after all of those years, my wildest dream came true... well, maybe not my wildest but centainly one I didn't think would ever happen.

Aside from the color I love how sharp everything is, even in the old games. On the older Game Boys the screem seemed to blurr when there was movement. With GBC though, this is not a problem. I don't really have anything bad to say about it, it's a lot like I expected it to be and a little better.

Game Boy Color FAQ

Q: How Big is GBC?

A: It's about the same size as GBP. The main differance comes at the bottom of the shell. Where GBP goes flat across the bottom and then curves up on the right hand side, GBC has a slight dip in the middle and does not curve. This makes the unit more symetrical (which I like personaly) while still alowing it to fit in most of GBP accessories.

Q: How many colors can GBC display on the screen?

A: 56 colors. These colors come out of a pallete of more than 32,000 colors. In case you were wondering, Sega Game Gear could only display 32 colors out of a pallete of 512. This is yet another way GBC is making it's mark as being far superieor to Game gear.

Q: I've heard so many conflicting reports but how many batteries does GBC REALLY take?

A: GBC uses two AA batteries which are said to last about 12 hrs. I find that to be about right.

Q: I really want to dig at Sega so how many batteries did Game Gear use?

A: Ah ha ha ha! Game gear used SIX batteries! and only had six hrs. of play time!

Q: Is GBC's screen backlit?

A: No, it's not. I think this is to save on batt. power, which it does. I don't find it to be a really big deal. The screen is very visable and will be even more so if you use the new Light Max accessorie. (See news section)

Q: Is there a contrast control on GBC?

A: No, one isn't really needed. I find myself reaching for it in changing light but then remember I don't need it!

Q: Can I play my old games in color?

A: Yes, you'll be able to use 12 preprogramed color palletes to choose from.

Q: Can I play my old games in black and white?

A: Now I've got a question... why? Yes you can. All you have to do is press left+B when the title screen apears.

Q: How much will it cost?

A: GBC has a suggested retail price of 79.95. Although I got mine at EB for $50 because of a trade in on my old GB.

Q: Is GBC really worth it?

A: Yes you won't regret it, if you have the money then you should really go out and get it.
