Top Gear Pocket
To start things off let me just say that if you're looking for an end all polygonal racing game on your GBC this is not it. So if you are going to continue with this review, get of all the hype you've been hearing out of your head.
Okay, now that I have brain washed you, the idea running through your head should be of all the old racing games you used to seeing on GameBoy. Now you pop in your brand new Top Gear game pak. You turn it on and the colorful GBC logo, rushes across the screen. The first thing you'll notice about this game is the crisp and clear menu that greets you in the begining. Once you get going you can select from two cars and three tracks. You also have the option of a manuel or automatic transmission.
Now that you're on the track you see the traditional Top Gear starting lights, just like the ones in Top Gear Rallu for th N64. After you're clear of the starting track you'll start picking up speed on the straight away. And most likely you will be surprised as you fly over your first hill, something that is very rare in a GameBoy game. If you try to tun to quickly, you also get a nice little shock from the rumble feature.
Like I said before, if you're looking for some game that will blow you away you may not find it. But if you buy this game, thinking that you're only getting a GameBoy racer then you will be truly happy. The graphics ar very good and it is so much faster and smoother than must GB racers. The sound isn't too bad although the engine sounds are no where nearly as good as Nintendo and Kemco had claimed. There isn't any music however, which seems a little strange at first, but you end up having so much fun that you don't really care.
This game is a lot bigger than I though it was. You only start out with two cars and three tracks but as soon as you win in the top three slots in the championship mode, you advance to a world of huge and chalenging courses. These include a grasslands, dessert, jungle, savana, night town and ruins course. There are more, but they are meant to be a surprise.
Some of the best things about this game are the crisp cool graphics, giant hills, high speed action, rumbling, flying through the air and the two player link up feature. Some things that I hate are the password save, no music and the hype about engine sounds that is really just a bunch of whining.
Overall, this racing game is like a cross between and SNES and GB racing game and is definatly worth the $25 (US) I paid for it. Back to the top
