Twins Story

Since I don't consider the first OVA plot cannon and the second OVA doesn't feature the twins (except for the hot spring trip omake at the end), this summary will only support anime TV episodes 1~52 and manga volumes 1~13. However, If you're looking for a summary of the entire Fushigi Yuugi series, look elsewhere. This summary covers ONLY the events where the Boshi twins play a major role.

*I might write the summary for the first OVA and the second OVA omake in the future, but only if I have the time and interest.

SPOILERS INFESTED!!!

Synopsis Part 1: Amiboshi

(Covers: MANGA volumes 5~6; ANIME episodes 17~24)

First appearing as Chiriko, Amiboshi is actually a Seiryuu ShichiSeishi in disguise. He is sent to "join" Suzaku no Miko and her seishi as a result of another one of Nakago's plans to prevent Konan from calling Suzaku. (Of course, we don't know this until much later.) So anyway, Suzaku no Miko, or Miaka, is stopping by Tamahome's house when she starts hearing the sound of flute. That same night, Miaka hears the melody again, so she goes out of the house to check it out. Bad idea. She is attacked by a swarm of bats. Fearing the danger of having the bats attack Tamahome's family, she runs away and leads the bats away from the house. Tasuki and Hotohori hear the commotion and rush to Miaka's rescue. However, there are just too many bats. The villain lurks in the background as Miaka is about to become the bats' feast. Then the sound of flute stops them. One by one, the bats end their lives by hitting head on into the trunk of a big tree. The "villain" himself can't stand the ki blasts within the melody of the flute, so he ends up human-combusting and falls to his death. Miaka and her seishi look for the source of the music and find a boy about her age. His clothes is torn and, through a tear in the shirt, Miaka sees Suzaku Seishi Chiriko's character on the boy's side. So Chiriko, or Amiboshi in disguise, follows Miaka's gang back to the Imperial Palace and settles there as Suzaku ShichiSeishi Chiriko. During his stay there, Amiboshi is always playing his flute to "comfort" the other Suzaku Seishi. When Miaka, Tasuki, and Chichiri are trapped in Kutou under Nakago's barrier, Chiriko/Amiboshi uses his flute to help them get out of it. So everything ends happily ever after, right? Not quite.

Eventually, Suzaku no Miko, with all her seishi gathered, is ready for the summoning ceremony. Just before the ceremony starts, we see Amiboshi writing something on his arm, and later Suboshi, who is in Kutou, receives the exact message on his arm! (What a great way for tele- communication.) He tells his twin that the ceremony is about to start. After every Suzaku Seishi lowers their defense, the ceremony starts. When after the scroll is burned and nothing happens, Chiriko/Amiboshi starts playing his flute in a different tune, causing everyone to scream in pain. It is now that Amiboshi reveals his true identity and admits to controlling the bats that had attacked Miaka when they first met. Tasuki angrily attacks Amiboshi, tears at his shirt and reveals "Ko," the character for Seiryuu ShichiSeishi Amiboshi.  Amiboshi continues to play his flute, which sends out a strong ki that is slowly killing the Suzaku Seishi and their miko. All of a sudden, another tune slips in, upsetting Amiboshi. With Amiboshi distracted, Tamahome is able to attack him. Amiboshi flees, followed closely by Tamahome and Tasuki. Upon reaching the riverbank, Amiboshi asks a fisherman for a boat. The fisherman refuses to give Amiboshi a ride because the river is pretty rough with the flood and all. Amiboshi is cornered as Tasuki and Tamahome catch up with him. Just then, Miaka appears with Chichiri. Amiboshi leaps up into the air and attempts to attack Miaka, which drives Tamahome to attack him. Amiboshi dodges the attack but lands at the wrong place. He steps on a loose tile at the edge of the river and falls backward when the tile crumples. Miaka tries to save him by grabbing the flute he is holding in his hand. Unfortunately, Amiboshi does not want to live anymore, so he lets go of the flute and falls into the rapids...

Meanwhile, Suboshi no longer feels his brother's ki and thinks he has died...

Synopsis Part 2: Suboshi

(Covers: MANGA volumes 7~9; ANIME episodes 25~36 & first half of episode 37)

Suboshi is first introduced to Yui by Nakago sometime before the Suzaku summoning ceremony. At the time, Yui is still upset over losing Tamahome, so she teases Suboshi about being a "kid" (They're the same age...) and how he can't possibly be an useful Seiryuu Shichiseishi. Yui leaves Suboshi an impression that she is pretty but cold and bitter.

Then Suboshi can't feel the presence of Amiboshi's ki (when Amiboshi falls into the rapids) Thinking his aniki is dead, he falls into a despair. Nakago informs Yui of this incident, and Yui approaches Suboshi. At first, Suboshi snaps in anger and says that Yui can't possibly understand what he's going through. Instead of backing away, Yui puts her arms around Suboshi and comforts him. From Yui, Suboshi receives the sympathy and comfort he needs to overcome his brother's "death." The next day, Suboshi apologizes to Yui for being rude to her before. (kawaii!!! Suboshi's blushing! ^^) Yui brushes it off and comments that she's glad that Suboshi is feeling better. Later, Nakago catches Suboshi lurking around the palace instead of staying with Seiryuu no Miko, or Yui, as he should be. He knows that Suboshi can't stand not going outside to find Amiboshi and avenge his death, so he gives Suboshi a mission...

It turns out that Suboshi's mission is to massacre Tamahome's family, and that's exactly what he does. Shortly after the "revenge," Tamahome, Miaka, and Nuriko come to take the family to the Konan palace. What greet them are the bodies of Tamahome's father and siblings. Suboshi, wearing a cloak covered with the family's blood, appears on the roof and starts to play the flute. He declares to the shocked Miaka and Nuriko that he has killed Tamahome's family to avenge for Amiboshi's death. Amiboshi's his other half and only close kin, and he would make those who hurt him pay dearly. In his anger, Suboshi would not listen to Nuriko's explanation about the real cause of Amiboshi's death, and he raises his ryuuseisui and lunges it toward Miaka and Nuriko with only murderous thoughts in his mind. Too bad for Suboshi, he doesn't get to do that. Tamahome, who is extremely mad at Suboshi, comes to the rescue. At first he lets Suboshi get the satisfaction of hurting him, but responds with a "Is that all you can do?" and proceeds to beat the crap out of Suboshi. Just then, Soi shows up with bolts of lightening and saves Suboshi's life. They retreat, leaving Tamahome to suffer the loss of his family.

Back in Kutou, Yui receives the news that Miaka is going after the Shinzaho, even if it means she will be fighting against Yui. As a result, Yui vows to fight Miaka for the Shinzaho. Suboshi and the rest of the Seiryuu Shichiseishi are ready to aid her in her quest. Miaka and her seishi have a hard time on the way to Hokkan, courtesy of Soi. Yui, however, has a rather smooth journey and reaches Hokkan earlier. The weather is extremely cold, so when Yui wants to talk to Nakago about their next plan, she sends Suboshi to deliver her wish. Suboshi is not happy that Yui only confines in Nakago, but he still goes to see Nakago. Being the impatient person that he is, Suboshi does not bother to knock before entering Nakago's tent, so he comes upon an embarrassing scene. Soi is back with some injuries, and she is having some "private" moment with Nakago. (In other words, they're having sex. ^^;) Embarrassed, Suboshi turns away and quickly delivers his message from Yui. Nakago replies that Soi is tired and he will send Ashitare next time. Suboshi wonders about the identity of Ashitare.

Much later, Yui, with Suboshi as her protector, is taking a walk on the streets of Tolan, Hokkan. Suboshi asks her whether the object of her unrequited love is Tamahome. This brings Yui some unwanted memories, so she responds by throwing a snowball at Suboshi's face. The snowball hits its target and while Suboshi is busy wiping the snow off his face, Yui runs away. After awhile, Yui bumps into Tamahome, who has just received news of the Shinzaho. Tamahome tries to convince Yui to come back to the good side, but Yui replies that it's too late. In her anger, Yui tells Tamahome that he's just a character from a book, which puzzles Tamahome. Before Tamahome can ask Yui more about this matter, Suboshi shows up and attacks him. Tamahome, no matter how much he would like to stay and beat on Suboshi again, leaves for more important matters. Suboshi is on the verge of going after him until Yui stops him. The two returns to their camp and Yui informs Nakago how the Suzaku side has already received information on the Shinzaho.

A day or so later, Suboshi suddenly barges in on Nakago and frantically tells him that he loses the sense of Ashitare's ki. Nakago replies that it does not matter since at least Ashitare manages to kill one of the Suzaku Shichiseishi (*sobs and wails.*) Yui and Suboshi wonders why Nakago is so calm. Nakago explains that the people from Hokkan are enemies of Kutou, so he plans to have Miaka retrieve the Shinzaho and takes it from her later. Yui goes back to her tent and starts studying for her high school entrance exam. She is memorizing English out loud as Suboshi peeks in to see what she's doing. Suboshi is curious about this "spell" that Yui is working on, so Yui explains to him that she is studying for the exam which she will be taking once she goes back to her world. Suboshi is disappointed to hear Yui will be returning to her world. During this interval, Nakago has succeed in getting the Shinzaho from Miaka, and is hatching another scheme. He sends Yui and Suboshi to go to Sairou first, while he stays behind in the camp. On her way to Sairou, Yui gets upset about Nakago having something more important to take care of than her, so she tells Suboshi that she is going back to the camp. Suboshi cannot control his feelings for Yui any longer and lets it all out. He stops Yui and tells her not to think about Nakago anymore. Yui retorts that Nakago is the one that took care of her when she most needed company. Suboshi shuts her up by placing his lips on hers and gives her a passionate kiss. Yui tries to push him away and yells at him to stop what he's doing. Suboshi tries to tell her that he loves her, but Tomo interrupts him and tells him that it's not proper to attack the miko like this. Suboshi goes off to sulk as Tomo shows Yui his power of illusion.

The next day, Yui is in her tent complaining about the hot sun in the desert. Suboshi timidly asks her if she's still mad at what he did the day before and adds that he had meant every word. Yui would not listen to him and yells that he is like "those men." Suboshi is confused, so Yui explains to him that she was raped by a group of men when she first arrived in Kutou. Suboshi is shocked and wants to know if that's the truth. Yui tells him that she would not make up something like this and wants Suboshi to give up on her. Suboshi asks why this happened and Yui blames it all on Miaka. She says if it weren't for Miaka, she would never have come here and get attacked. Suboshi slowly murmurs "so it's Suzaku no Miko who's causing Yui grief." He tells Yui his feelings for her would remain the same no matter what happens to her and that he will not forgive anyone for making Yui suffer. He gets up and Yui asks him where he is going. He replies that he will be right back and walks out.

Meanwhile, Miaka feels that she cannot be Tamahome's bride anymore now that Nakago has raped her, so she runs off on her own. She trips and falls. When she looks up, she hears a voice promising a "swift death" and sees... Suboshi?!!

Synopsis Part 3: Kaika

(Covers: MANGA first half of volume 10; ANIME second half of episodes 37 & first half of episode 38)

Miaka silently accepts her doom as "Suboshi" holds up a knife.  All of a sudden, "Suboshi" yells at her to get down and then proceeds to throw the knife at a dark animal behind her.  The animal dies instantly, and "Suboshi" immediately rushes over to Miaka to help her up.  With fatigue and confusion adding up to her shock, Miaka faints in "Suboshi's" arms.

Meanwhile...in the desert.  Suboshi is trying to come up with new attacks for his ryuuseisui.  Yui comes to tell him that Nakago has caught up with them and that he is severely hurt.  Back in Nakago's tent, Yui is extremely worried about Nakago's shoulder wounds, so she decided to hold back until Nakago is healed.  A jealous Suboshi is not very about happy it.

Miaka is having a nightmare about the rape.  When she wakes up, she sees "Suboshi" towering over her.  "Suboshi" tells her that she has been unconscious for three days and now she's safe in his hometown, which is located near the border of Sairo.  Miaka asks him if he is Suboshi, but this only results in a confused reaction from the "Subosh-look-alike."  An elderly couple choose to come in at this time.  They call the Suboshi-look-alike "Kaika."  When the mother asks about Miaka's injuries, Miaka is surprised about the lack of pain even though it is obvious that she has many wounds.  The mother explains that she has let Miaka drank some soup made from the "bohkyaku weed", a type of medicine the town pharmacist made which can help the patient forget about the pain.  The mother suggests that Kaika should play the flute he's so good at, and Kaika obeys.  Miaka is stunned when Kaika takes up his flute, and when she hears the tune Kaika plays, all assumptions are confirmed.  Kaika is actually Amiboshi, who everyone thought had drowned in the rapids.  Miaka wonders if Amiboshi is suffering from amnesia.

The next day at meal, Kaika's mother advices Miaka to eat more so she would recover sooner.  However, that thought does not last long after the family witness Miaka's true appetite.  After Miaka wolves down whole plates of food, everyone is in a state of shock.  Kaika's father immediately suggests that to consume so much food all at once may not be a good idea either.  Everyone heaves a sign of relief as Miaka follows the second advice.  Then, Kaika's father asks Miaka about her plans for the future and suggests that she should stay and become Kaika's wife.  The mere thought brings back memories of Tamahome, and Miaka starts crying.  Kaika notices Miaka's sadness and decides to cheer her up by carrying her outside to go for a walk.

Once outside, Kaika starts saying how once something bad happens, one often starts to view everything the bad way and eventually loses all hope.  Miaka becomes angry and lashes out all her anger at Kaika.  She blames him for ruining everything for her and how he is now free of his past evil deeds and lives happily with his new parents.  Then she calms down and apologizes for her lost of control.  Kaika starts to play his flute and warmly tells Miaka that he hopes the tune can help her find courage and regain her spirit.  Neither of them notices Kaika's mother, who has been eavesdropping the whole time.

When they go back to the house, Kaika's mother gives Miaka some more of the bohkyaku soup to drink in hopes of erasing her memories.  She is afraid that with Miaka's memory of Kaika's past, Kaika would recover his memory and leave her.  However, she makes a mistake on the dosage, which makes the bohkyaku soup an extremely dangerous drug.  Miaka falls unconscious and develops a high fever.  After Kaika assures his mother that he will never leaves her and father, he asks both his parents to leave the room.  To break Miaka's fever, Kaika decides to use his ki.  Somewhere in the Seiryuu side, Suboshi and Nakago both feel Amiboshi's ki...  When Miaka finally wakes up, Kaika asks her to stay with him forever.  If she choose to stay, she would never have to worry about anything anymore.  With that, Kaika leaves the room to let Miaka rest and think things over.  In the Seiryuu tent, Nakago asks Suboshi about Amiboshi's ki, to which Suboshi explains how Amiboshi can cure diseases and reduce fevers by blowing ki into another person's body.  Nakago concludes that he now knows of Suzaku no Miko's hiding place.

Kaika's parents have a short conversation with Miaka.  They tell her that they had lost their son Kaika a long time ago.  When they found the nearly-drowned boy by the riverbank, it was as if their son had come back to them.  That is why they named the boy Kaika.  Later, Kaika comes into the room with a bowl of bohkyaku soup.  He tells Miaka that if she drinks the soup with the intent of forgetting her past, she will be granted her wish.  Miaka fights an internal battle of whether she should drink the soup and forget all the pain along with all the memories of her friends, her comrades, and her lover - Tamahome.  She drops the bowl of soup and cries out that she cannot just forget about everyone.  Kaika shocks her by asking about Tamahome and then reveals that he still remembers everything.  He knows that he is Amiboshi, one of the Seiryuu ShichiSeishi.

Kaika, or Amiboshi, tells Miaka that he had wanted to die in that river.  Kutou, unlike Konan, is constantly under a state of civil war.  He and Suboshi have been orphans since they were really young.  When Seiryuu no Miko first appears, Amiboshi has been under the impression that Seiryuu would be summoned and that peace would not be too far away.  Nakago has sent him to the Suzaku side as a spy.  However, during his stay with the Suzaku Seishi, he realized that Nakago would not bring about peace.  That is why he had hoped that his death would prevent the summoning of Seiryuu and thus end the war.  Miaka, in a dazed state, tells Amiboshi that even without the seishi, they can still summon Suzaku or Seiryuu.  Then, Miaka makes up her mind to find Yui and tell her how Nakago has been using her all these time.  Amiboshi is surprised and asks why Miaka would be willing to take such a dangerous risk.  Miaka replies that Yui has once taught her how there is only a small difference between the word "fleeting" and the word "challenging," yet both have completely different meanings.  She is afraid, but she doesn't want to become a coward who runs away from her responsibilities, so she choose to "challenge."

Synopsis Part 4: Reunion

(Covers: MANGA second half of volume 10; ANIME second half of episodes 38 & episodes 39~41)

Kutou soldiers attack the village under Nakago's orders.  Both of Amiboshi's adoptive parents are wounded and Miaka decides to face Nakago.  When a Kutou soldiers try to stop her, Amiboshi shows up and kills them by ki manipulation through his flute.  Suddenly, Amiboshi senses Tomo and Tamahome's presence nearby and encourages Miaka to go find Tamahome.  Miaka, still shaken by how she is no longer qualified as Tamahome's lover, declines.  Amiboshi then decides to go find Tamahome and bring him to Miaka himself.  After Amiboshi's adoptive father hands him some of the bohkyaku soup in case it is needed, Amiboshi rushes off to find Tamahome.  With Amiboshi gone, Miaka runs away (again) so she won't have to confront Tamahome.  Instead, she runs into Soi, who tells her Nakago did not rape her.  Soi also informs Miaka of Tamahome's current predicament, which sends Miaka off to search for Tamahome.  Meanwhile, Amiboshi has found Tamahome under Tomo's captive and tries to talk Tomo into letting Tamahome go.

Miaka shows up before them and an overjoyed Tamahome breaks free of Tomo's grasp and knocks him down.  The two lovers share a brief moment of happiness when suddenly the real Tomo (the other one was an illusion/clone) captures Amiboshi and stabs Tamahome through the chest.  Tamahome falls off a cliff and Miaka, overwhelmed by this, also falls into Tomo's shin illusions.

While Miaka is under Tomo's spells, Amiboshi attempts to cut loose of his own restraints so he can help Miaka.  When Tomo's concentration is diverted, Amiboshi breaks two of his own fingers to induce enough pain to break free of the illusions which binds him.  Now free, Amiboshi starts playing the flute, using the melody to guide Miaka out of Tomo's attempted rape.  Miaka succeeds and manages to destroy Tomo's shin in the process.  She returns back to the reality, naked and unconscious.  Needless to say, Tomo is extremely angry at this intervention and demands to know where Amiboshi's loyalty lies.  Amiboshi replies that he will protect Miaka and fight the evil.  Thus, a battle begins between the two.  It is short-lived, however, since Amiboshi is already in an disadvantage situation from having two of his fingers handicapped to fully use his power through the flute.  As much as he tries to fend off Tomo's attack, he soon finds himself heavily wounded and facing death.  Just before Tomo launches the final strike, an object suddenly hits him from behind and pierces through his chest.  Tomo turns to find an even more pissed off Suboshi yelling at him to leave Amiboshi alone.  Suboshi, in his fierce protective no-one-hurts-my-brother-and-live mode, strikes at Tomo until Tomo's body end up a limp, bloody mess on the ground.

The two brothers are finally reunited.  Suboshi checks Amiboshi's injuries and asks about his previous disappearance.  Instead of giving a straight-forward answer, Amiboshi asks Suboshi to drink the bohkyaku soup and go with him to live with his adoptive parents.  Suboshi takes hold of the bohkyaku soup, looks at it for a long time, and makes up his mind.  He pretends to drink the soup, but instead of swallowing it, he transfers the content to Amiboshi through a kiss.  Amiboshi, too stunned and too weak to protest, drinks the soup and loses consciousness as a teary eyed Suboshi confesses his love for Yui and his inability to leave her side.  At this moment, Miaka wakes up to find herself in a dangerous situation.

Suboshi lays Amiboshi on the ground and turns to Miaka.  His hatred for Suzaku no Miko is evident through his heated features.  His grabs Miaka and vows to make her suffer the same way she has made Yui suffered.  However, he doesn't get to do so because Tamahome, who has been rescued by his former master, shows up.  Tasuki and the others also appear (as Tomo's death ends the illusion which kept them captive) and Suboshi finds himself outnumbered.  Suboshi quickly picks up Amiboshi's unconscious form and escapes.

Back in Kaika's village, a neighbor finds Kaika under a tree and goes to tell Kaika's adoptive parents.  As they are busy tending to the unconscious boy, they fail to notice the figure hiding several feet away behind a tree.  The figure, Suboshi, looks upon the scene before him sadly and wishes his older twin happiness.  He cries as he bids his goodbyes and turns away.
