From the State border toKingston
SEthere are lots of limestone reefs with
beaches between, you will need to explore. This coastline is open to the
southern ocean. From Kingston SE the coast swings NW and is mostly a large
unbroken beach, surfing potential is limited by access. There are very
few places to access the beach and a 4WD is useful and the size of wave
usually decreases the further north you move. This beach ends at Victor
Harbor and in this area there are reef
and beach breaks, although Kangaroo Island can block the swell.
.
Adelaide, South Australia's
capital is located on the Gulf of St Vincent,
although it can get small choppy waves it isn't really a serious destination.
From suburban Hallett Cove,
sandy beaches stretch south. Several have boat ramps. Fishing is prohibited
beyond the reef at Port Noarlungain
a natural aquatic reserve. A short walk towards Southport
Beach reveals the winding Onkaparinga
River. Moana is a popular beach
for body surfing and board riders and had vehicle access right onto the
beach. Maslin Beach
is South Australia's first legal nude beach., while Port
Willunga has good scuba diving on the
offshore reefs where the wreck of the ship
Star
of Greecenow lies.
Adelaide's surfers usually head for the tip of
Yorke
Peninsula, where there are some good reef
/ point setups. Spencer Gulf separates
Yorke Peninsula from Eyre Peninsula. The southern and western coasts ofEyre
Peninsula offer a variety of reef, point
and beach breaks. Many breaks need a 4WD to get to. There are some closely
guarded classic setups along this coast. Many of the waves are quite powerful
and are not to be underestimated.
West of Ceduna is the famous
Cactus
Beach breaks, the well known breaks are
only some of several in the area. The country is harsh and 100F land temperatures
can combine with 50F water temperatures. There is only one type of shark
in this area, Great Whites, they are not friendly. The surf ends at the
Nullabour
Plain, not due to lack of swell, but due
to 200 miles of unbroken cliff which stretches to the West Australia border.

More than one
million Australians go fishing at some time
each year, according to the latest surveys.
This
remarkable figure is due to several factors. The car gives most people
easy access to hundreds of first class fishing spots. With most of our
population living on or near the coast, good fishing is never far away.
We have the most appetising and appealing variety of fish species available
to anglers anywhere in the world.
Fish is an important Australian and worldwide
resource. They are a valuable food and are used for many other purposes.
Australians are reknown fish eaters, stats. show that in 1993 every
Australian consumed 3.4 kg of fish products from Australian waters.
Clayton
is a port for some of the Lakes and Coorong Fishers.
The Lakes and Coorong Fishery established in 1854 is a Heritage Fishery
and is a wild Fishery with a future. Lakes and Coorong Fishers are Australia's
largest carp and redfin removers. They also catch quality fresh callop,
flounder, mullet, blackbream, cod, mulloway and bony bream.
This is anethical sustainable harvest. Lakes and Coorong Fishers
catch 12% of Australia's total harvest. Commercial Fishing has always been
a major part of Clayton's
history and even now it is by far the major employer in Clayton and provides
the travellor through the Lakes and Coorong
Restaurant and S.A. Wild Fish with fresh fish
straight from the water to plate.
The
Coorong is home to 37 professional
fishermen. They fish the Lakes, the Coorong and the Ocean and earlier this
year created a world first by agreeing to a voluntary self management designed
to sustain the ecosystem and their livelihoods. In addition to the fishermen,
there are cocklers who scrounge the ocean beach taking 400 tonnes a year
of cockles to be sold as bait and eating.

Fishing Trips - I live right on the
coast in NSW so I do a lot of estuary, beach and rockfishing.
With the colder water in winter, most of the fish around here have
gone off the bite or headed north for the warmer waters. We still
get a few now, but not like in summer.
