TECA 1318 HOME PAGE AND SYLLABUS:  The entire website is considered part of the course syllabus.  This is a project based class rather than a class that is based on test grades.

Part of the grade for each assignment is professionalism.  Submitting assignments by the due date is an indication of professionalism.  This is a VERY important attribute of an effective teachers.  Up to 20 points may be deducted for assignments submitted late.  Students must receive written permission from the instructor before late work is accepted.  Notify the instructor prior to the due date if the assignment is not to be completed on time.

TECA 1318 Wellness of the Young Child

Welcome to Wellness of the Young Child (TECA 1318)! This course is the factors that impact the well-being of the young child. By the end of the semester the student will be able to satisfactorily complete all the listed learning objectives.

This course is a study of the factors that impact the well-being of the young child, including healthy behavior, food, nutrition, fitness, and safety practices, and focuses on local and national standards and legal implications of relevant policies and regulations. The course includes a required 16 contact hour field experience. TECA 1311 is the prerequisite for this class.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the learner  will be able to:

1.  Understand concepts that are listed for each chapter and apply them to the field of education.

2.  Read and comprehend assigned reading material, demonstrating the ability to analyze and interpret a variety of materials.

3.  Write in an intelligent and informative manner, demonstrating the ability to produce clear, correct, and coherent prose adapted to purpose, occasion, and audience.

4.  Think critically in analyzing information, demonstrating the ability to evaluate arguments and to construct alternative strategies.

5.   Display increasing computer literacy, demonstrating the ability to use computer-based technology in communicating, solving problems, and acquiring information.

In addition to the specific course requirements described in your syllabus, the education department requires a 16-hour internship (unless otherwise instructed), the purchase of an online portfolio, completion of specific portfolio requirements, participation in the mentoring program, and grade/attendance reporting. Many of these requirements have specific due dates that must be met. During the first week of the semester, go to the department website at  http://education.tjc.edu. At the top of the web page, there is a link for "Current Majors" that will direct you to the descriptions and directions for these requirements. Please note that the due dates for these requirements cannot be changed and that these requirements must be completed in order to receive a passing grade in this course.

The course is divided into three segments:  Study Guides:  completed no later than February 28; internship: completed no later than April 15; and course project: completed no later than May 1.;   Students must complete each section before submitting the next.  Unless otherwise instructed, all assignments are to be submitted via email either in the body of the email or as an attachment.  Late assignments will be accepted ONLY with prior written permission from the instructor.
