Republic of Azerbaijan is a country, located in the South-Eastern Caucasus (UN member since 1992), with a total area of 86,600 sq. km., with more than 8 million population. It has regained its independence in 1991 after the break-up of the Soviet Union. Azerbaijan possesses a unique geographic position lying on the crossroads between Europe and Asia. Independent Azerbaijan covers only a part (nouthern) of the historical region named as such, whereas, the southern part of the region is situated in Iran, and divided into three districts, Western, Central and Eastern Azerbaijan. An estimated 25 million of Azerbaijanis live in there.
