SIRIUS BLACK
Sirius Black was a close friend of James Potter’s, and a member of “The Maruaders”. He, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, and James Potter would go on monthly escapades at night because of Lupin’s condition. The four forged the Maruader’s Map, and thought that nothing could break their bond of friendship. However, they did not know that one of their number was, literally and nonliterally, a rat. Peter Pettigrew sold out Lily and James to Voldemort and when Sirius confronted him about it, he framed Sirius for it. Thus, Sirius went to Azkaban and Peter went into hiding as a rat.
For thirteen years Sirius stayed in Azkaban, not going crazy as most of the prisoners do, because he had one thought to hold him over: he was innocent. One day, however, Cornelius Fudge came for a visit, and Sirius saw on his copy of the Daily Prophet a picture of the Weasley family in Egypt. On Ron Weasley’s shoulder was his pet rat, Scabbers, a.k.a Peter Pettigrew. Sirius escaped and headed to Hogwarts for revenge.
All of Harry’s third year, everyone believed that Sirius was hunting down Harry when he was really hunting Peter. He eventually was able to get Harry, Ron with Peter in tow, and Hermione into the Shrieking Shack so that he could explain the situation. Lupin and Snape showed up. As they were heading towards the castle to turn Peter in, Lup.in transformed, allowing Peter to escape.
Snape and Cornelius Fudge were going to have the Dementor’s Kiss performed on Sirius, as Snape wanted revenge, and Fudge thought he was a follower of Voldemort’s. However, with the help of Dumbledore, Harry, Hermione, Hermione’s Time-Turner, and Buckbeak the hippogriff, Sirius escaped. Throughout the next year Harry and Sirius remained in contact. When You-Know-Who returned, the Order of the Phoenix was reinstated, and Sirius once again became a member. Harry came to think of Sirius as a parental figure. So, when he had a vision of Voldemort torturing Sirius in the Department of Mysteries, he went to rescue him. It was a trick, however, to lure him there so that he could take a prophecy off of a shelf. Harry and his comrades did battle with the Death Eaters there, and the Order showed up. In the fray that insued, Sirius Black fell through an archway in the Death Chamber. Once again fate had robbed Harry of someone he cares about.
