SYBILL TRELAWNEY
Sybil Trelawney is Divination professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She has held the post for sixteen years as of book five, excluding a brief period in the aforementioned book, when she was sacked by Dolores Umbridge, who had temporarily taken control of the school. Trelawney is also the granddaughter of the highly revered seer, Cassandra Trelawney.
As much as Sybil insists that seeing occasionally skips three generations, her clairvoyance is so rare that she is hardly qualified to be the Divination teacher. She has made two real predictions her entire life.
However few and far between this predictions may be, they are both excruciatingly important, both concerning Lord Voldemort, and the first concerning Harry. The first tells of how the person with the ability to bring about the fall of Voldemort, but because one of Voldemort’s spies only heard half of the prophecy, he went to kill Harry, and in doing so, set the stage for the entire Harry Potter series.
The second prophecy was made in Harry’s presence, during his Divination exam in his third year. It told of how Voldemort’s servant would set out that night to rejoin him, and in doing so, would bring about Voldemort’s resurrection, rising “greater and more terrible than ever he was”.
It is apparant that Dumbledore feels it is important to keep Trelawney close. He has kept her on staff, even though she’s basically a fraud. This proved to be wise, as she did in fact make another prediction after her original one. Has she delivered her last authentic prediction? Only time, and the next two books, will tell.
