December 25 Hey, I guess it's Christmas. I got a fish pillow, an electric ice scraper and some other things. But mostly they're gonna give me about five hundred dollars to buy a class ring which will be really cool. Anyhoo, I thought I would make a list of a few things I learned about Moorpark, ie. things my friends will only let me ramble on and on about for so long until they start threatening me :) well, it's a two year program at Moorpark community college, and the labs are hands-on at the zoo on campus called America's Teaching Zoo! The first years don't actually take care of the animals. They clean up after them, then go to class and learn. The second years get their "animal assignments", which tells them which animals they will get to work with. Some animals are semester-long assignments, and some are year-long. Probably animals like Taj the tiger and Schmoo the sea lion are year long. Anyhoo, they select your animals based off of a points system. You get points by getting good grades, having good attendance, and stuff like that. You can actually get kicked out if you're late too often! And, you get kicked out if you don't make a C or better in your classes. Also, the curriculum sounds seriously time consuming. You gotta take care of your animals over the weekends, and usually every day and most holidays. And over the weekends you give tours to the visitors, and put on shows. Also, there's some summer camps for kids, where we put them to work to do our bidding to clean up poop and scrub the animals cage floors and walls with a toothbrush!! Muhahaha! Well, okay... it's probably a little more educational than that... Oh and when you fill out the application, if you have all the requirements, you have to attend an informational seminar type thing on campus in California, where they give you a tour of the zoo, and show you all sorts of neat things about the college, and try to scare away the people who can't pay for it or aren't willing to put in all the hours. I found a great description of the informational meeting here at seafoam with even more detail provided in another seafoam article. They're really cool articles :) I also learned a lot of this stuff from writing to Laurie the Lizard Lady, whose website is in the links section. She's in the eatm program right now she's so lucky :) Anyhoo, so my interviews went... okay, I guess. I got two second interviews, but I didn't go to one of them because I decided I didn't want to work for an insurance company. The other one is in june and it's for a marketing job, which might actually mean it's a sales job which might mean living mostly off comission, which i really don't want to do. I think I gotta figure out a better way to look for jobs... well, anyway, have fun!! |
