Saturday, Jun. 29, 2002 Tom Clancy, “Red Storm Rising” – his second installment after “Red October” – and without Jack Ryan, what an outrage! After I got over my frustration because of that, I quite enjoyed myself. It is set during the good old times of all thriller writers – the iron curtain is still there and the Russians are the bad guys. And –surprise, surprise – they start WW III, this time by attacking Germany. I am glad that Tom Clancy does not rule the US, otherwise we would have another World War every other week! Anyway, pretty good, even without Jack Ryan (I’m still not over that!). Lots of submarines, frigates, carriers, sea battles – the usual day for Clany fans….. just where the heck is Jack Ryan? Saturday, Jun. 15, 2002 Finally, after having it on the shelf since Christmas, I read “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” by Joanne K. Rowling. And it was great, two days and I was done. Harry had really miserable summer holidays with his muggle family. So he is glad to get back to Hogwarts. But even before he gets there, he already receives very strange warnings from an even stranger elf. Oh-oh, bad things are a-happening. Really good! Why did nobody write this kind of stuff when I was that age? Stephen King, “Dolores Claiborne” – for 30 years Dolores worked as a maid and housekeeper for cruel and mean Vera. Now she is supposed to have killed her. Did she? Why would she? Not to mention the dark spots in Dolores’ past. I liked the movie with Kathy Bates quite a lot, but the book was only mildly entertaining. Perhaps because I already knew the story. But it felt a bit like he sort of wrote it in between, because he needed some change. Not as inspired as some of his other stories. That said, this is the third of his books that I have read in a German translation. And all of his books that I did not like that much, have been in German. Perhaps the translations just aren’t any good? Monday, Jun. 10, 2002 Tom Clancy, “The Bear And The Dragon”, another 1100-page whopper. It took me forever to get interested. Pretty much 400 pages, actually. But then things started happening and the last couple hundred pages I gobbled up. Basically Jack Ryan is still the American President and he is still wondering how the fuck he managed to end up in that miserable situation. The Chinese are still up to no good – I wonder if the Chinese really dislike Tom Clancy, American born or otherwise? He certainly had a thing going with them in the last three books. I guess the world is getting poorer in usable fiends. Anyway, they are up to no good and in due time start a war against Russia. You wanna know more, you gotta read the book. I quite like the end of the book, with Jack stuck in….. while the evil thingy is…..read the book! Now I’m reading “Dolores Claiborne” by Stephen King, but I’m kinda bored. Perhaps it’s the German translation? |
