"Was having coffee with a friend yesterday. While we were chatting about Hatyai, he related to me an incident which I feel will be good to share with members here.

My friend John (not his real name) got to know about Hatyai recently and decides to explore the place there. He got acquainted with a person in Hatyai, and they soon became close friends. This Thai friend would orientate him on the brothel scene in Hatyai, and accompany him to select his companion. He paid 2200 - 2300 bht on each booking of the prostitute per day. John also brought his group of close friends to Hatyai, numbering from 8 to 12 people in a group. Upon John's recommendation, the groups were always accompanied and guided by his Thai friend. John also took a liking on one of the girls there and will always booked her at a stretch of 5 days or more. The price he paid is still 2200bht per day, and the Thai friend told him the price cannot be lowered because of the good service that she provides. Being a close friend, John believed him.

A couple of months later, a friend of John decides to go and enjoy himself in Hatyai alone. When he went hunting for a companion in the brothels, he happened to chance upon the lady that John has been faithfully patronising whenever he is in Hatyai. Out of curiosity, he ask for the price. He was quoted 2000bht, and after negotiation, the price was reduced to 1800bht. The difference in this price from what John has been paying is 400bht. John's friend did not take the girl, but instead informed John about it.

John and a couple of close friends immediately went to Hatyai to clarify with the girl. She spilled the beans that his Thai friend has been taking commission, and thats why the price quoted to him cannot be lower than 2200bht, irrespectively of how many days he had booked her. Further discrete investigation with other ladies in other brothels confirmed this arrangement. Individually this 400bht not a big sum. But with a group of 10 who booked an average of 3 nights per trip, this commission can add up to a princely sum of 12,000bht. However the main disappointment for my friend John is that his Thai friend has not been straight with him all along. He told me that he doesn't mind paying commission to his Thai friend if he is upfront about it, instead of being misled to think that all the assistance he is providing to John is out of friendship.
