Hart's Peak

Day 5, August 9 -- We had a quick breakfast of frosted flakes, blueberry pop tarts, Hot Chocolate.  We broke camp and saddled up the burros and left Indian Writings Camp and made our way to back to the Ponil Corral and camp.  We had lunch at Hart's Peak, what a view!  Our lunch included beef jerky, crackers, banana chips, and fruit punch drink.  It was here that we discovered that burros like banana chips.  After lunch we took a crew photo with our four legged friends on the peak with the traditional pack line.  We descended to Ponil and in it in good time and arrived at about 2:00 pm.  Our burro wranglers returned the burros to their home unpacked them and gave them their last care and feeding and said good bye to the their four legged friends.  The rest of the crew found showers with plenty of HOT water and/or re-supplied our commissary needs and found a snack bar that sold candy and ice-cream drumsticks.  Some met with Bruce Gallagher public relations staff photographer that took some photos of our crew activities.

That evening we had a chuckwagon dinner of beefstew, biscuits and chocolate milk.  We went to a staff campfire and heard the story describing the gift to scouting from  Mr. Waite Phillips.

Day 6, August 10 -- We had a quick breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast, jelly, raisins and hot chocolate.

Today we mounted horses at the Ponil Corral and went on a hour and a half trail ride following the South Ponil Creek to Pueblano where we set up camp at Pueblano Ruins camp.
For lunch we had dehydrated ham salad and crackers, cookies, and grape drink.

After lunch we went to a hunter safety session and then were allowed to shoot 22 cal rifles on the rifle range.

Our dinner was a western hash with carrots, lemon pie and fruit punch drink.

We were supposed to go to a staff campfire but due to the two hours struggling to get our bear bag hung we missed the campfire.
