What is an 'Eating Disorder'?

An eating problem, or eating disorder is a disagreement with food or a way of releasing pent up emotions.

There are many different eating disorders.  Some are covered frequently in magazines (Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating), others are not so well known.

For some sufferers, food intake or what they do with their food, is their only method of control in their life.  They feel if they can regain some form of control they will feel better about themselves.

Often sufferers of eating problems don't even realise they have a problem until it is too late, or someone else notices it meaning there is yet more pressure placed on the sufferer.

Eating problems don't occur through conscious decisions from the sufferer.  It happens gradually, helped on by negative feedback from others in whatever area of their life.

Eating problems aren't 'calls for help' they are a way of coping.
