                                SHANE @ FRANK SKINNER SHOW
                                                                 25th Nov 2004
Positive vibrations first (fans' reviews, originally posted to
PRS forum)
Just watched Shane on Skinner. It was great to see him in such great form. He was such a funny bastard I think he's great healtier everytime i see him. So funny seeing him with the false teeth in. Pity the Skinner crowd were laughin at him instead of with him.
Pierce

I didn't recognise Shane tonight. My husband and I (oops I sound like the queen) have been going to Pogues/Popes/Shane concerts at least once a year for the last 13 years, and have tickets for Brixton in December, but are worried about what we'll see this time! I was convinced Frank had brought in a Shane look-alike, but when it got to part 2 I realised it was him - what happened?!
Ann (ann@london.co.uk)

Shane was class! Good work Shano. the audience were deinitely on his side, laughing with him after a few nervous chuckles at the beginning. When Shane relaxes he does great, the great wit is still there, even if sometimes it gets buried
Dublin town

I think it went ok. He won them over with the Victoria bit, the highlight was when Frank said that they had something in common, and as quick as flash Shane said "yeah...bad shirts" That was sheer class.
Wrecker

Yeah, good to see the man on the Skinner show, and Frankie didnt take the piss which was a suprise! I thought Shane came across well, and it was good to hear Frank bigging up the Crock of Gold! Shane didnt know how to answer when asked about when the next studio album was gonna come out though did he?!
Shane does have a wicked sense of humour, dry and ironic, and he seemed to be loving it in the spotlight which is cool...
Danny "Pope" Heatley (dannyjheatley@hotmail.com)

Shane was very nervous on the Frank Skinner show. Also, it is clear there is no commitment to a new solo album. He isn't interested anymore, that is made explicitly clear. As I have argued on this forum before, Shane thought he would be happily retired and living in Greece or Ireland by the time he was 35. He didn't expect he would still have to jump through hoops as he approached 50. The Pogues Live Album from the reunion concerts were the object of the discussion.
It was good to see him looking reasonably well. But, it is obvious that he isn't 'content' in his personal life.
As I am an irreligious cove I can only wish Shane my best wishes,
Andy P. Davies

WELL DONE FRANK ! a great interview, although Shane was nervous he handled it well and Frank made him feel at home, I think Shane was looking the best I have seen him for years, that little extra weight takes away the old gaunt look, and what a wicked sence of humour he had, and as for the false teeth, good on ya Shane! TOP MAN.
Nige

Congratulations to Shane and Skinner (way better than Pat Kenny).
Was a great interview, funny and not all about the drinking and drugs...he seems in good frame of mind... who knows what will happen after the pogues reunion gigs...but one thing that shane should do is start the jogging, what a fat-bastard he has become.. finally, what a comparison to the interview on the late late show about 4 years ago, where you had a thin, gaunt shane hardly able to talk with those infamous pauses and delayed replies... last night was much better. and i think that skinner done very well, not taking the piss, asking about the album's and the reunion... and indeed the false teeth was hilarious...
MR

After last night's interview - I hope they can get back together again.
And Frank Skinner handled Shane great last night - giving him time to answer the questions , not butting in and letting him say what he wanted to say . (Unlike Danny Baker !).
The sight of Shane with teeth really freaked me out though!
I noticed Frank didn't put them back in afterwards - can't think why...

Old habits die hard
The Guardian

Twenty-five years ago, Shane MacGowan was given six weeks to live. But he's still here, and so are the Pogues - back to their original lineup for a new lease of life. Dave Simpson joins them in Dublin to relive the bad old days...                                                                                                  MORE   >>>

PUNK AND DISORDERLY
Daily Mirror
19th Nov 2004

It is hard to believe that Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan is still alive. So many in the legendary band’s circle – including guest member/producer Joe Strummer and A Fairytale Of New York collaborator Kirsty MacColl – have died. But MacGowan, who was always the group’s biggest drink and drug hellraiser, endures.
“We were an organic band,” says MacGowan, 46. “We lived like a family and what happened was that all the good people died and all the worst people lived.”

                                          ANOTHER RAINY NIGHT
The new Mary McPartlan's single Rainy Night In Soho was released on 15th Jul.
"
The single Rainy Night in Soho, written by Shane MacGowan, receives a superb treatment. Mary produces here a radical transformation of this song about life, love and moving on and makes of it one of the most surprising covers of modern music in recent times. It has received widespread critical acclaim both in Ireland and Great Britain. "

                                    A  TRIBUTE  TO  LUKE  KELLY
Gaiety Theater, Dublin, Ireland, 29th-30th Oct
The legendary Dubliners took to the stage for 7 nights at the Gaiety, as a week-long tribute to Luke Kelly. Twice the band was joined by Shane MacGowan.
No official comments, sorry. Just fans' reviews so far (originally reported to PRS forum):

Shane made an appearance with the Dubliners on friday night - he sang Roddy McCorley, Freeborn Man Of The Travelling People, The Irish Rover and Molly Malone... Good performance - smoking on stage and making al lsorts of gestures to the audience during performance - gig was very good... Was a great performance of the McColl song - first time actually hearing it sang for me! Shane also sang Molly Malone which is a rare event to - and grabbed his crotch each time he sang cockles and muscles.
PS: Cashman was lurking around backstage... Shane left the greenroom fairly quickly after the gig...
MR

Pleased to announce Shane also turned up on saturday night as guest of the Dubliners. John Sheehan (fiddle player) said he's not sure if their guest was here as he was hosting a table at a charity dinner but might make it later. At this, Shane ambles onstage to huge cheers, small bottle of red wine and pint of guinness in hand and proceeded to launch into
Roddy McCorley followed by Freeborn Man Of The Travellin' People ("one that Luke used to sing" according to Shane) and then finished off with a great version of Irish Rover. He had a huge pair of black n' white brother creepers on and I thought he looked in great health - seems to have shed a few pounds and every song was word for word. Augers well for Pogues gigs.

Shane was on fine form at the weekend with the Dubliners. His new girlfriend had made him accompany her to a charity do before he played with the Dubs on Saturday.
Rumour has it she is not well liked and is using Shane mainly for his name and her charity causes.
Travellin Man was excellent and I think it should be on the next album along with Runaround Sue.
Joey was there too. Shane turned up at 9pm on Friday having 'had the flu' on Thursday night and was unable to make it.
No sign of Sean Fay. Has he gone back to the US?
TippGal

Great gig on Friday nite with Shane + Dubs. Due to the absolutely shite public transport in this country I did manage to miss the first half but fuck em I got there.
Shane came on literally ten mins after I arrived which was nice, and I got some nice footage of him singin Roddy, Free born man and Irish Rover.
Pity he didn't turn up on Thursday nite, what a bastard that must have been for those who went to see him.

FLOORED GENIUS
Exclusive: Shane McGowan is unwell
10 Sep 2002
PlayLouder hero, leader of The Pogues, writer of some of the best songs ever, Shane McGowan, is "on his last legs", according to friends.
The singer was admitted to a Dublin hospital on Saturday night after collapsing in his home from taking what's thought to be a cocktail of whiskey and heroin. He played a gig last night from a wheelchair, but was, according to sources, "completely fucking out of it".
Shane's health has spiralled downward drastically since his fianc?, Victoria Mary, left him.Recent sightings of the man have led to cruel "Tellytubby" comparisons. Friends of the singer, however, are not amused.
"It's a real shame," said one. "He seemed kind of on his way back last November, but that's gone out of the window."
DEJA VOUS ? :))

P.S. On that famous Saturday he "played a stormer at Death Disco" and later threw up on stage during Olympia show...

"Donegal is the most loved thing about Ireland in cyberspace. In a running
online poll asking what makes Ireland great the county has come consistently out as number one. Just below Co Donegal is the Irish revolutionary labour leader executed in 1916, James Connolly; at number three is the former Pogues lead singer Shane MacGowan."

And this report is out of date as now Shane is  The First ! Keep voting !! The Irish Treasure has to be at the head :))

Shane is out in a wee row
The Sun
SHANE MacGOWAN was kicked out of the five-star Connaught Hotel in London yesterday morning over a mysterious incident involving his bearded drinking companion.
Staff at the posh gaff accused Shane’s buddy of “soiling” an expensive Queen Anne antique chair.
THE POGUES frontman stuck up for his pal but hotel staff asked them both to leave.
There was some dispute over whether a stain on the chair really was white wine or not.
The guys had been holed up at the hotel since Shane’s success at Monday’s Q Awards.
A source told : “Shane’s pal is always getting into trouble because he looks like Lord Lucan.
“He was once held by police who were convinced they’d tracked down the missing aristocrat. “In reality he’s a millionaire property developer.”

Celtic Soul Rebels

Drunk and belligerent, in 1982 they roared out of the clubs and squats of north London and ripped up the Irish music rulebook. Then a decade later they combusted in a haze of whiskey fumes. Ann Scanlon charts the rise, the fall and rebirth of The Pogues...

Grand deed, Oyvind! Thanks a lot (on behalf of all intrested and now satisfied :))

BTW,
the site is worth to be checked. Great stuff. Highly recommended !

                                        POGUES'  REUNION  TOUR                                                                                                        Dublin, Ireland
In concert: The Pogues, Point Theatre, Dublin, December 23.
Sunday Business Post
12 Sept 2004

It is difficult to tell whether selling tickets in September for this December gig is ridiculously early or highly organised.
Either way, legendary rabble rousers the Pogues are to reform their original line-up for a series of Christmas concerts, and tickets go on sale next Saturday.
Frontman Shane MacGowan quit the group in 1991 and while the rest of the Pogues continued without him (ex-Clash man Joe Strummer occasionally provided the vocals), they eventually disbanded in 1995.
MacGowan, Jem Finer, Spider Stacy, James Fearnley, Darryl Hunt, Andrew Ranken, Phil Chevron, Terry Woods and Cait O'Riordan formed in 1982 and will join forces again for one night in Dublin at the end of a tour through Glasgow and Britain.
Tickets go on sale
September 18. They cost from ˆ44.50 (including booking fee) and are available from Ticketmaster (0818-719300 / www.ticketmaster.ie) and usual outlets nationwide.

This tour is billed as the last opportunity to see the original line-up live. If so it's a gig you really shouldn't want to miss. The Pogues, formed in 1982, mixed a combustable blend of punk and folk and became one of the biggest bands of the decade. And they've always been at their best live, be it an outdoor festival or an indoor pogo-ing palace such as the Academy. The sheer energy of
Fiesta and Sally MacLennane lift the crowd up ready to be spat out in time for a fit of despair as manic switches to maudlin and the band play The Old Main Drag and Auld Triangle.
This rollercoaster ride is but a taste of the of ups and downs of troubled songwriter and frontman Shane MacGowan's life. But in battling his own personal demons, MacGowan has crafted a weighty and lasting body of work in a career that spans The Pogues, The Popes and solo spells. He's even managed to excel in the one arena where most other songwriter greats fail. Yes, Shane was behind one of the only truly great Christmas records, his duet with Kirsty MacColl,
Fairy Tale of New York, which will no doubt get an airing at this festively timed Brixton bash. I'd also find it hard to think of a band more associated with London than the Pogues this side of The Clash. Rainy Night In Soho comes close to being my top capital song, while I happen to know my brother David rates Lullaby of London as his. And what London lad hasn't courted with a bounce in his step thanks to The Pogue's London Girl?
So treat yourself to a great pre-Christmas cracker and come join me and some other punk pogo-ing Pogue nutters down at the Academy this December.

A festive fairytale
The Evening Chronicle
3 Sept 2004
By Gordon Barr,

The Pogues will be heading to the North East for a festive shindig, we can reveal today.
The band will be fronted by Shane MacGowan, who headed the group at the height of their fame, and will play the
Metro Radio Arena on December 16.
Tickets for the gig went on sale today, and the show will be in a `bowl' theatre-style format.
The gig, just a week before Christmas, couldn't be better timing, with The Pogues famed for releasing one of the biggest-selling festive tunes ever,
Fairytale of New York.
Arena executive director Colin Revel said: "The Pogues will be a great show for the run-up to Christmas, especially with Shane MacGowan fronting."
Tickets for the Pogues are £25
