Songs I Recommend

The songs I listen to changes a lot, depends on my mood. If I'm depressed then I'll listen to a lot more depressing songs than if I'm hyper, unless I'm trying to cheer myself up of course. This isn't my complete playlist but it is a sample of what I'm listening to at the moment if you're interested. If you've got a song you think I might like just let me know or tell everyone about it on the new message board. (A shameless plug I know)

Jack off Jill - Strawberry Gashes

This song is probably one of their best - even though the band split up in Autumn 2000 and most members are onto other things now, I haven't heard many other songs that beat this one! The tune is amazing, and the lyrics are obviously very well thought out. Jessicka's vocal skills are really brought out in this song.

Turn her over, a candle is lit, I see through her
Blow it out and save all her ashes for me.
Curse me, sold her, the poison that runs it's course through her,
Pale white skin with strawberry gashes all over all over.
Watch me fault her, you're living like a disaster,
She said kill me faster, with strawberry gashes all over.
Called her over, and asked her if she was improving,
She said feels fine, it's wonderful wonderful here.
Hex me told her, I dreamt of a devil that knew her,
Pale white skin, with strawberry gashes all over all over.

Garbage - Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)

When you first hear it, it just sounds like yet another candy filled (or cherry filled, in this case) pop song. However, it's probably one of the cleverest songs you'll ever hear - and I'm not just saying that because I'm a Garbage fan. It's probably Garbage's darkest song, though it's disguised with the happy keyboards. It's based on the book "Sarah" by JT Leroy, about the author's life, though even if you hadn't read the book you can still appreciate Shirley Manson's amazing song writing skills. Listen to the song, then pay attention to the lyrics... trust me, you'll be in for a real surprise!

She gave you everything she had,
But she was young and dumb she just turned twenty-one.
She didn't care to hang around,
So when the shit came down why she was nowhere to be found.
This life can turn a good girl bad,
She was the sweetest thing that you had ever seen.

More recently, I have managed to get a copy of the book, and though disturbing in places, it's well worth a read. I also can play it on guitar (yay) and you can find tabs for it here if you're interested in learning it (come on, if I can play it it can't be that hard!)

Snake River Conspiracy - Vulcan

SRC haven't been around very long, but they're a brilliant mix between metal and techno. The singer is female but she does a great job at screaming when she has to, which is coo. They have lot's of great songs on their debut album, Sonic Jihad, but Vulcan is probably one of the best! The lyrics don't make much sense, but hey, just listen and enjoy!

Fuck! You and your stupid smile, you make me wanna strangle you,
Fuck! You and your disco flavour, hot sauce on your snake skin boots.
Hey! You forgot your rag bag, your sixty-nine sedan!
Hey! You fucking fag hag, drop trou tossed salad man!

Sucking on my thumb just like the child you think I am,
You've managed to convince yourself, but I don't think you can manage me!
Life! Based on a short story, written by a bitch named Vern,
In! A maroon velour sweatsuit, playing with your brand new urn.
Shit! Has he lost his mind? Can't he see or is he just blind?

The Offspring - No Hero

This song is one of the Offspring's older ones, but it's probably one of my favourite ones of theirs. It's from the point of view of someone who's friend has committed suicide, I think the lyrics are almost spot on, even though they're pretty simple.

Once you said, you'd stick to it until the end,
I guess you lied, they call it suicide.
Now your gone, what was so wrong,
That you couldn't find a way to carry on?
Second guess, did I do my best? There was a friend I had...

Johnny was a weirdo so what did you expect?
I ain't no fucking hero, I'm just trying to survive myself.
I should have known, you went through it alone.
I wonder why, did you even try?
You could have come to me, I would have helped you see,
You could have found a way to carry on.
Second guess, did I do my best? There was a friend I had...
"Johnny's strange behaviour was a tip-off," they say,
But I ain't no fucking saviour, I'm just living day by day.

Boa - Duvet

The singer has such a beautiful voice - this is such a well thought out song! The tune might not be the most catchy, but there's an acoustic (which I personally think is better) as well as the ordinary, and probably God knows how many remixes of it out there. The lyrics are great too! I've listened to a few of their songs and each has the same great elements in it. The acoustic version of this is so relaxing, and just a nice song to listen to.

And you don't seem to understand, a shame you seemed an honest man.
And all the fears you hold so dear, will turn to whisper in your ear.
And you know what they say might hurt you,
And you know that it means so much.
And you don't even feel a thing.
I am falling, I am fading, I have lost it all.
And you don't seem the lying kind, a shame I can read your mind.
And all the things that I read there, candle-lit smile that we both share.

My Ruin - Terror

"My Ruin" are a new techno/metal band, they're pretty good. This song is weird though - it's just the singer basically saying the words over some brilliant guitars. However, what she says is pretty cool - it's very foreboding, and very powerful sounding... though even if you don't like the lyrics, the guitars definitely make it worth listening to!

I am able to change so I live without regret, without remorse, only a remix.
I am drunk, I am sober.
Heaven doesn’t want me and hell’s afraid I’ll take over.
Don’t bother trying to censor me or shut me up,
Because it won’t work.
I am cold and distant, yet warm and close to those who deserve to see that side of me,
Part of me, the heart of me.
You find me so hard to understand in your world, the world you perceive to be so normal.
I am deformed, scorned, new born,
I am me, and I know exactly who I am, what I am, and the wrath that I bring.
The ugly deity, the lying truth, the virgin whore, the quiet storm,
A lover, a fighter, a saint, a sinner, a sister, the daughter,
Old school, a beginning.
I have decorated myself with love, hate, truth, you, all of you, both of you, none of you,
More than one of you.

Eve's Plum - Lipstuck

Eve's Plum did loads of great songs - the music survived, even if the band didn't... they split up in 1995, but this is still a great tune. It's just a really silly song that's really catchy and fun to sing along with! Just look at the lyrics and you'll get the idea of what kind of song this is!

The lipstick was gluestick, it sealed my fate,
Never even able to communicate.
My silence stunned me, I lost my sanity,
Not able to wear all the colours for my vanity.
Can't be witty, can't be clever,

'Til these thin lips may I sever?

I didn't mean to be vain,
I'm too vain to be mean.
All I want is to lick my lips and purr!

Garbage - Only Happy When it Rains

I really love this song, it's what got me interested in Garbage in the first place and even now, about a year or so later, I still can listen to it for hours without getting bored of it. It's about someone who's depressed but that's not the reason I like it, I just think it has a really catchy tune and great lyrics. I recently downloaded the video from Morpheus, and it's really cool. It has Shirley dancing around in a field with a load of freaky people in suits at the end for some strange reason and the rest of the band destroying their guitars and stuff. Almost every Garbage fan I've spoken to, despite having two other albums come out since, say this is still their favourite song - and if you listen to it then I'm pretty sure you'll realise why!

I'm only happy when it rains,
I'm only happy when it's complicated.
And though I know you can't appreciate it,
I'm only happy when it rains.
You know I love it when the music's bad,
Why it feels so good to feel so sad?
I'm only happy when it rains,
I feel good when things are going wrong,
I only listen to the sad, sad songs,
I'm only happy when it rains.

Queens of the Stone Age - If Only

I've had this song for ages and I've listened to loads of their other songs, and though I'm not really fond of those, I love this one. The intro is really cool, and is great when you listen to it on earphones -  the lead guitar plays in one ear and slowly the rest of it comes into the other ear, which I think is a great effect. The singing is good as well, though I think with any other song I'd find it whiny and annoying, but in this it's just great! Only problem is that it's pretty short, but it's still a great song!

If it gets you down then I'll take it,
If it gets you up well I don't want it.
If it gets you down, so broken hearted,
If it gets you down well I want it.
If only, only, if only, only... we were nothing at all.

So blow our mind and make it lazy,
Those long long days with no escaping.
I hold the wheel to let it go,
Don't wanna stop, don't wanna know.
If it gets you down, well just don't blame me.

The Hippos - Wasting my Life

I found out about this ska band when I was looking for hippo stuff on the net (don't ask why) and I they're really cool. I like all of their song's but this is one of the ones I listen to the most - they've been around for while and have two albums out so it'd be impossible to list them all. This song is really catchy and has great lyrics, and is also a really happy tune, despite what it's about. It's a great one to listen to you when you're hyper, I find.

Something about the way she never looks my way, I'm in love,
Something about the way she doesn't hears a word I say, I'm in love.
But people say we're not the same, she's out of my league, I'm insane,
Am I wasting my life waiting for you? Is it true, am I wasting my life on you?
Something about the way she looked at me today, I'm in love,
Something in the way she tells me to get away, I'm in love.

Elastica - Waking Up

Although this is one of their older songs from their first album, I really like this song, as it completely describes me! I listen to this every morning before I get up as it's also quite a hyper-waking up song! All of their songs have really good lyrics and most of them are also really catchy and hyper-active songs that cheer me up a lot, but this one I can listen to for ages and not get sick of.

I'd work very hard but I'm lazy,
I can't take the pressure and it's starting to show.
In my heart, you know that it pains me,
A life of leisure is no life you know.
Waking up and getting up has never been easy,
Oh, I think you should know, oh, I think you should go.
Make a cup of tea and put a record on.
I'd work very hard but I'm lazy,
I've got a lot of songs but they're all in my head,
I'll get a guitar and a lover who pays me,
If I can't be a star I won't get out of bed.

SpineShank - New Disease

This piece of Metal is probably one of my favourite SpineShank songs. It's got a really good, catchy tune with a great chorus and a great bass line - it's great to shout along to as well as not really being a depressing song either, which is cool. They're releasing this one as well soon, which is great, and will definitely be a must-buy CD single.

Now I can take this, everything I know,
Realize that I'm nothing I wanted to be.
I can never change anything I've done,
Because it's the only thing I have left.
Blame yourself again for what I didn't do,

Never even knew it was coming from me.

It changed the way I felt, the worst is yet to come,
Because I have gone too far now.
Nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, changed my mind,
And it leads me to a new disease.
Somebody, somebody, somebody, somebody, let it die,
But it still becomes a new disease.

Static-X - This is Not

Static-X really reminded me of SpineShank, as they have the same kind of sound, but they're still good. This was the first song of their's that I heard and I think it's great. There's a lot of shouting in it so it's not good if you have a headache but it's still a great song with a catchy tune.

Lines and the light stream, screaming by the scream,
Burning down not me you see me suffer.
Haunted by your spirit, undead by your spit,
Taunted by yourself alive, fazed and burning state.
Hazed and spinning fate, fazed and burning.
I say I can't come, you say this ain't home,
Hating this I mouth your name.
This is not my life, this is not my home,
This is not me, I hate this.

Goldfinger - Seems Like Yesterday

This is a really good piece of Ska, and the only real reason I like it is just because it's a happy song that cheers me up. It's got good lyrics as well but the main reason I like it is just because of the song. Even though I think it's about spending the summer with someone or looking back on memories with friends and how everything has changed even though it only feels like yesterday that you were there, it's still a really happy song that just cheers me up.

So ask me all the questions, don't tell me that I'm lying,
Let's just on with what we've got.
Take me back to a place that no one knows,
The air is green, we both have nowhere else to go,
It seems so long ago yet seems like yesterday.
There we were, running through the hills back home,
We'll never leave and we'll never be alone.

OPM - Heaven is a Halfpipe

Okay, this might be trendy-net of the season but it gets really addictive and I've been brainwashed into playing it several times - despite that, it's a great skateboarding anthem. If you haven't heard this then where have you been?!

Now heaven would be a DJ, spinning dub all night long,
And heaven would just kickin' back, with Jesus packing my bong.
And if you don't believe in Jesus and Muhammad and Budha too,
And while the world is warring, just sit back and laugh at you singing...

If I die before I wake,
At least in heaven I can skate.
'Cos right now on earth I cant do jack,
Without the man up on my back.

Econoline Crush - By the Riverside

This is a really cool song, and I listen to it for hours, it's really addictive and just cool. It's got a really uplifting and catchy chorus which has good lyrics and solo's in it as well. I've used this song to help convert all of my friends into EC fans, and it's not surprising when you listen to this!

Walking into a new frontier, taking three four steps and I'm out of here.
Got to get it right.
Bring it to me slowly, don't go so fast,
I got to make it last.

I take a ride on the winds of change,
It take my changes and I hope it pays.

Push it to the limit,
the limits they change.

Sitting by the riverside, watch it all go by.

AnarChaos - Destructive World

AnarChaos are actually my friend's band, but I think they're great, and this is probably one of my favourite songs of theirs. It's got a really catchy tune and the lyrics are cool as well. My friend Gazza put loads of effort into it and it's definitely been worth it!

[I'm sorry, I don't know the lyrics to it, but as soon as I get them I'll put some of them here!]

Go visit their site here! (Yes, a shameful plug I know, but hey, it is my friend's band!)

Linkin Park - The Untitled [In the End]

I just love this song, I think it's probably one of Linkin Park's best. I don't really know what I like about it but it's got a really good tune and the lyrics are really good as well. It's also got a really catchy chorus to it too. They're going to release it in October - I can't wait!

It starts with one thing, I don't know why, it doesn't even matter how hard you try.
Keep that in mind, I designed this rhyme to explain in due time all I know.
Time is a valuable thing, watch it fly by as the pendulum swings.
Watch it count down to the end of the day, the clock ticks life away, it's so unreal.
Didn't look out below, watched the time go right out the window,
Trying to hold on, I didn't even know I wasted it all just to watch you go.

Econoline Crush - Razorblades and Bandaides

I really love this song, despite the fact it's one of the only songs I've got that can make me cry. I love the wailing of the guitars and the lyrics just explain how I feel about my ex when I'm low. Since then I've told him that it reminds me of him, but he doesn't get why I find it so depressing - I guess he can't have really listened to the lyrics, huh? lol.

If I kissed you would you push my face away?
If I told you how I feel would you have listened anyway?
I miss you more than words could ever say,
I miss you every singly empty day.
Did you think this would be easy my friend?
Did you think it'd come this, our bitter end?
...If I touched you would you push my hand away?
If I listened would I've heard the things that made me run away?

American Hi-Fi - Another Perfect Day

The chorus of this sounds really sarcastic. I love this song, mainly because it explains how I feel a lot of the time - having the worst day of my life, always getting the short straw in everything, with just a few things left to hold on to which always hurt me or let me down in some way, while everyone else is having another "perfect day." Even though you've been hurting a lot and managing to hide it from everyone so you don't get them down as well, you can't hold it in much longer and know that one day you'll just break down.

I'm holding on, waiting for your call,
It's simple but I can't explain this.
I'm sinking down, I feel like I could die,
I'm falling off, I don't know why.

I still believe it when you say,
It's another perfect day, another perfect day.

...So I might try to leave it all behind,
I know tomorrow's not so bright now.

I'll say goodbye 'cos nothing good can last,
You wear and figured no where fast.

And today I don't know how to keep it all inside,
But I guess I'll let it slide.

Blink 182 - Adam's Song

This is (yet another) song that I thinks really good, I have a fear (almost a paranoia) that I'm going to end up dying alone and heartbroken, having had my heart ripped apart by everyone I'd been out with... I'm so positive about my future aren't I?

I never thought I'd die alone, I laughed the loudest who'd have known?
I traced the cord back to the wall, no wonder, it was never plugged in at all.
I took my time, I hurried up, the choice was mine, I didn't think enough.
I'm too depressed to go on, you'll be sorry when I'm gone.
...I never thought I'd die alone, another six months I'll be unknown,
Give all my things to all my friends, you'll never set foot in my room again.
...I never conquered, rarely came, sixteen just held such better days,
Days when I still felt alive, when I couldn't wait to get outside,
The world was wide, too late to try.

Metallica - Nothing Else Matters

I don't like this one necessarily for the lyrics of it, but it's just a really good song with great guitars and a good yet depressing tune to it. When you see the words written down, it doesn't seem so depressing, more like an uplifting song telling you to do whatever you want to do, yet if you only listen to the tune then it is.

So close, no matter how far, couldn't be much from the heart,
Forever trust in who you are, and nothing else matters.
Never wrote myself this way, life is ours, we live it our way,
All these words I won't just say, and nothing else matters.
Trust I seek and I find in you, every day for us something new,
Open mind for a different view, and nothing else matters.
Never care for what they do, never care for what they know,
But I know.

I think Gazza and Beth will be pleased to see that yes, I really do listen to Metallica sometimes, and no, they didn't threaten or pay me to put it up here either...
