She was named Mary E. Breen at birth. However, when she was a very young child her father died and her mother married William Kealy. Thereafter she was known as Mary E. Kealy. Shortly after her mother's remarriage the family moved from Iowa to Neligh, Nebraska, later to Albion, and finally to St. Edward.

After her marriage, she spent the greater part of her life in the St. Edward community, residing on a farm southwest of town. In the fall of 1960 she moved up to Columbus and made her home there with her daughter, Ellen. In 1965 she returned to St. Edward, and lived with her son, Leo, on the family farm. The last year and one-half of her life she spent in Parkview Nursing Home in Fullerton.
