August 20, 2001 - Chongqing and the Buddhist Grottoes of Dazu |

The scenic highlight of the Yangtze boat trip. It was pretty, but then we sailed through the rest of the gorges by night, and the scenery the rest of the way to Chongqing was grey and dull. |
Some scenes from the Yangtze, from Chongqing city and from the terrific Buddhist cave temples of Dazu, near Chongqing. |

Chongqing station, late in the evening. Graydon trying to get us out of Chongqing that evening, and two ticket sellers telling hime that everything is full. He gets a ticket for the next night, allowing us to visit the Dazu cave temples the next day. |
The caves and rock overhangs at Dazu, about 120 km from Chongqing, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and deservedly so. The marvellous Buddhist carvings date from the 7th through 13th centuries. This is an intricate carving of the wheel of life. |
A 30-metre-long Reclining (ie, dead) Buddha with mourners in front of him. |
