What is a Ladmo? Ladimir Kwiatkowski, who as Ladmo brought smiles to four generations of Arizona children.... Ladmo....The Great Man Child! Bringer of the cartoons! Giver of Ladmo Bags! Buddy to children, no matter how old we got! Ladmo was always our friend! How lucky Arizona was when Ladmo decided not to follow a baseball career and instead entertain and befriend us! Sadly.... Ladmo has left us.... It was a sad day when he left us... I beleive that he is up there .... still entertaing and still passing out Ladmo Bags to children........ |

AH! Wallace! Bill "Wallace" Thompson... Wallace wrote the show, the gags! He started all this madness! And we love him for it! 35 years of Fun and Laughter! He loves old cars, old movies Civil War re-enactments! And he brought this all to the show. Giving us 35 years of Laughter and Love! He has donated almost all of the stuff from the show to The Central Division of the Arizona Historical Soceity. He Was Always "Wallace", but he was also the great "Mr Grudgmeyer". Wallace and Ladmo were buddies.... so they had to have someone who could play fight with Ladmo! |

Gerald's Moster Is Really Good. He Will Show You Where To Go..... |
KPHO TV Channel 5 was the first TV station in Phoenix, AZ- signing on December 4th, 1949. It was an affiliate for all 4 networks- ABC,CBS, NBC, and Dumont (a short lived network remembered primarily for the Jackie Gleason show.) Bill Thompson created the character of Wallace Snead for an afternoon children's program - "The Golddust Charlie Show" In January 1955, "It's Wallace" premiered, showing '30s & '40s cartoons at 6:30 pm Tuesdays & Thursdays. Ladimir Kwiatkowski was a crew member. A year after it premiered, Ladimir joined Wallace on camera as the child-like Ladmo. A partnership that would last 35 years was born. The show was simple. They showed cartoons, performed corny skits, and gave away an obscene amount of junk food to kids in "Ladmo Bags". The audience was always packed with kids and parents- just about every Cub Scout and Brownie troop in the area got to go at least once. In 1968, the name was changed to Wallace & Company, and it became The Wallace & Ladmo Show in 1970. It was also moved from afternoons to mornings in 1973 (although it was still taped in the afternoons- right after school.) There were also many spin-offs- The Wallace Sunday Show, Teen Beat, Take Five (all three were variety shows), The Ladmo Show, Ladmo's Clubhouse (both showed primarily cartoons), The Comedy Greats (old time movies), and Low Budget Talk Show (an adult talk show spoof- only a pilot was made) None of these shows lasted very long, but they all helped cement Wallace & Ladmo's place in TV history. Wallace & Ladmo didn't just exist on TV- they were everywhere. Every year during the Jerry Lewis telethon, they would stand outside the studio all day and collect money from people at a drive-up "fishbowl". They appeared at the State Fair every year- performing several stage shows a day. (The stage has since been renamed the Wallace & Ladmo Stage.) They were at Legend City (a cheesy amusement park) every weekend it seemed. They held birthday party's for kids at Peter Piper Pizza. They even advertised for other companies. Many people outside of Arizona have heard of Wallace & Ladmo, mainly because it holds the record for longest running daily show-anywhere. It was also the first show broadcast in color in Phoenix (they beat the KOOL-10 news by two hours). And over the years, it won nine Emmy awards. But unless you grew up with it, you could never fully understand. The show ran from 7:00-8:30 during most of this time. KPHO ran a limited "Best Of Wallace & Ladmo" series in the summer of '94. It was only a half hour, and it only ran six weeks- hardly enough time to convey the impact this show had on so many Arizona children. But for a brief time, 10:30 on a Saturday night became 7:00 on a weekday morning. |
