Jet Li is one of my favorite Chinese actors. I didn't start watching his Chinese movies until 1999, right before he came to the U.S. (I know, I'm kinda slow). I first saw him in Fong Sai Yuk and I fell in love with him right away. (It also helps that he is incredibly CUTE!) He is a talented wushu martial artist; you’d only expect so from someone who has trained since age nine. He is one great actor as well. Most of the time he plays the honest, quiet, reluctant hero: You fall in love with him fast. But he has played other roles as well. In Swordsman II he played a comical guy; a wandering drunkard who even falls for a girl (who is really a guy). He wasn’t the typical Jet Li suave character but it was hilarious.font>
Since coming to the States I think he has done a pretty good job with his movies. (I still like his American movies better than Jackie Chan's American movies). It was really cool to see him finally play a villain in Lethal Weapon 4, although didn’t you see the sincerity in his smile? This didn’t convince me that he was evil. Plus he died way too quickly in the end, don't you think?
I didn't like Romeo Must Die that much. It was entertaining but in terms of martial arts, it didn't impress me. I liked seeing him try to fit into American culture, which I guess was the point of the movie. My favorite part of the movie was when came out of Aaliyah's apartment and pretended to be the dim sum delivery guy. That was hilarious.
Kiss of the Dragon was very good. I enjoyed it a lot. The only complaint I had was the scene editing. It was so bad; the screen jumped entirely too much. Half of the time, you couldn't see what Jet Li was doing. It seemed like they sped up camera too. My favorite part was when he kicked the pool ball. Although they used computers for that one, I have to admit, that was tight! I love playing pool so the combination of those two cracked me up.
Next Jet Li is coming out with The One, which will be out in late 2001. Jet Li is supposed to be fighting himself. Sound to me like a Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde type of thing which will be interesting to see. Hopefully we’ll see the evil side of Jet Li.
There is also rumor that he is supposed to do a movie with Jackie Chan but that won't be till the end of 2002. I am really waiting to see how that turns out and who will win at the end.
Apart from his movies, Jet Li is a family guy. He is married to Nina, another Chinese celebrity. They have a daughter who was just born a little after their marriage. You don't see him in any love scenes because he doesn't want to offend her. Isn't that so sweet?
