Club Roccamorice
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
More about Club Roccamorice - visit the  club website
Remembering our Abruzzese heritage is very important for future generations. One of the ways that this has been done is shown by Club Roccamorice of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This is a club which traces its roots to the Comune of Roccamorice and which  holds various events throughout the year in order to gather fellow paesani together to celebrate their heritage. In the early 1970's a group of Roccalanis decided to form their own club rather than be invited to general Italian gatherings. Another reason was to make sure future generations would know where their parents came from. There were many roccalani who were successful business people and wanted to contribute something to the community of Paesani.
The club's  first event of the year is a New Year's Eve Gala. This is followed by the "Festa di Sant'Antonio" in mid-January.  In Roccolano tradition, volunteer actors recreate the scene of the temptatation of Sant'Antonio by the "Donzella."
In mid-summer they hold their annual picnic where many paesani get together for demonstrations of cheese-making, lunch provided by the club, bocce and card tournaments and games for the children followed by a mass to celebrate the "Festa di San Bartolomeo."
In November is held the Fishermans Night Dinner with a fish dinner and entertainment.

Anyone wanting more information about the club and memberships may contact the President:  Luisa DiCarlo at 905-851-3595 .

LETTOMANOPPELLO
January 17:  Portrayal of the temptation of Sant' Antonio-the reciting and singing of the victorious fight of the saint against the temptations of the wicked demon.

During Lent:  Portrayal of the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ.

Easter Monday:  Festa of the Madonna di Costantinopoli at the chiesa dell'Iconicella.

May 8:  A manifestation that remembers the old pagan rituals of fertility and the beginning of Spring. Until the past century there was a procession, after the ritual for the fertility of the flocks, to the chapel at the Grotta di San Angelo, where mass was celebrated, with the participation of the whole town. Today the tradition is returning, little by little, to its place among the more important manifestations of the year. It also recalls the town's pastoral heritage, as the Eremo San Angelo, along the S. Angelo brook, was the place where historically the shepherds always gathered their flocks together in the Spring, to lead them to the high mountain pastures to graze for the season.

June 29:  The festa of Saints Peter and Paul, in the Pietrara section of Lettomanoppello, near the little church of Sancti Petri ad Troiam. The festa concludes with a dance and a fireworks display.

July:  The Concorso Nazionale per Compositori di Musica Originale per Banda, a competition for the composition of band music, sponsored by Lettomanoppello's band association.

August:   1. The Gustavo Di Rentiis competition for poetry written in dialect.
                 2. The Sagra dei Formaggi, a two day festival in mid-August featuring the products of the local shepherds.

September:  "Dieci Giornati in Pietra", Ten Days in Stone, Lettomanoppello's international sculpting contest, in which works are created from local stone; it is held at the end of August, beginning of September.

October:  Starting on the first Sunday of October is the four day festa for the Madonna di Costantinopoli and Saints Emidio, Nicola ( the patron saint of Lettomanoppello)  and Rocco. The festa includes daily processions, music by the town band, a street fair, nightly entertainment and fireworks. The last day of the festa is dedicated to San Rocco, and it culminates in a town-wide feast.

December 6:  Festa for the town's patron saint, San Nicola.
ROCCAMORICE
January 16:  Portrayal of the temptation of Sant'Antonio by the diavolo and Donzella and his victory overcoming them. Different groups tour the town for about a week putting on their skits and collecting donations for a feast afterwards.

August 24:  Festa di San Donato. Statue of San Donato is carried through the town in a procession to the local church-San Donato.

August 25:  Festa di San Bartolomeo. Procession to the eremo to retrieve the statue of San Bartolomeo and bring it back to the church of San Donato in Roccamorice where it stays until September 9. A three day festa is held from August 24 to 26 to honour these Saints. During the day there is a street fair and music by local bands. In the evening there are rides for the children, entertainment in the town square and fireworks.
