One of the traditional activities that continues strong is the raising of certain crops, primarily grapes, olives and figs (shown in the top left photo). Top right photo is a fig basket ( la cesta) used for picking figs. The grapes are pressed and made into wine for local consumption, and the olives are pressed to produce locally consumed olive oil. Since fresh fruit is an integral part of the local diet, not only figs but apples and other fruits are grown in small quanities for personal use.

The old outdoor stone-built woodburning ovens are no longer a part of daily life, but some still exist and are used occasionally. In the top photo, the oven is being fired up. Bottom left, the bread is being put into the oven on a paddle by Donato DiPasquale of Costa Del Colle. Pans of pizza are waiting their turn. In the photo of the bread, on the right, lies the evidence of how well these ovens work. Below is a photo taken 40 to 50 years ago, when these ovens were more regularly used; the woman baking bread is Angiolina Di Paolo Rulli.

"Fountains" like this one, Fonte Cialiort, are common around Roccamorice and throughout the region. They served as the water supply before indoor plumbing, and their use is still well within living memory. Spring water is always fed into the troughs of these fountains from above at one end, through a pipe from which clean water for drinking and cooking can be taken. It is not visible in this photo but is to the right. The water in the trough itself was used for laundry and cleaning.
