Pvt. John Skinner Co. E, 5th CT Infantry John was born in Ireland in 1844 & came to the US in 1863. He was drafted on 8/1/1863 as a Pvt. He was wounded & captured 6/22/1864 at Kolb's Farm, GA. Taken to Andersonville 7/28/1864, where lower 1/3 of left leg was amputated. Exchanged 11/14/1864 & was discharged for disability on 8/21/65. Tintype courtesy of his descendant, Walter M. Niblick. |
Capt. Ezra Lewis Moore Co. G, 7th CT Infantry Enlisted 9/4/1861 as a Pvt. Apptd. Adjutant 3/16/1863. Promoted Capt. & A.A.G. U.S. Vols. 10/17/1864. Discharged 9/16/1865. Chaplain Heman Lincoln Wayland 7th CT Infantry Born in Rhode Island 4/23/1830; a graduate of Brown University in 1849. Studied theology at Newton. Taught in Vermont & the University of Rochester. He was apptd. Chaplain of the 7th on 9/15/1861, resigned in November 1862 only to be reappointed a month later. Resigned 1/1/1864. Capt. E. Lt. Col. Jerome Tourtellotte 7th CT Infantry Served in 3 months campaign of Bull Run in Co. A, 2nd CT Vols. as a Private. Enlisted 8/26/1861 as a 1st Lt. in Co. K, 7th CT Vols. Promoted Capt. 3/20/1862. Wounded & captured 7/11/1863 at Fort Wagner, SC. Paroled 2/28/1865. Discharged 3/18/1865. Mustered in as Major 6/1/1865. Promoted Lt. Col. 7/24/1865. Unidentified Color Sergeant of the 7th Connecticut holding regimental flag The backmark is for a New Haven photographer and has a revenue stamp which dates the photo to around 1865. The photo was taken on July 29, 1865 by Beers and Mansfield. This exact image is displayed in Vol. 92, pg. 4985 at the US Army History Institute at Carlisle Barracks, PA (Mollus Collection). Sgt. Joseph H. Seavey 31st Wisconsin Infantry Joseph Henry Seavey enlisted on 10/9/62. On that date he was mustered into Captain George D. Rogers' Company D, 31st Wisconsin Infantry. Seavey was promoted to Sergeant on 12/24/62. He was captured at Bentonville, NC on 3/19/65, and briefly imprisoned at Libby Prison in Richmond, VA through the end of the war. Discharged on 5/12/65. Sgt. Daniel Gallagher 9th Connecticut Infantry Daniel Gallagher, a Massachusetts resident, enlisted on 3/29/62 as a Private. On that date he mustered into Company K, 9th Connecticut Infantry. Gallagher was promoted to Corporal on 1/1/63 and to Sergeant on 5/6/63. He re-enlisted on 1/4/64, and deserted on 5/20/64. According to family history, Gallagher told stories of the fall of New Orleans and of the malaria that swept through the regiment as they dug defenses outside of that city. This image may have been taken in New Haven. His military records indicate that he deserted while in that city with his regiment. Lt. Edward Smith 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery Smith was a resident of Litchfield, CT when he enlisted on 5/23/61 as a Sgt. On that date he mustered into Co. I, 1st CT Heavy Artillery. Promoted to 2nd Lt. of Co. G on 3/1/62, and to 1st Lt. of Co. F on 3/2/462. Discharged on 10/26/63. In the photo at left, Smith is seated at far left, along with other officers from his regiment. The photo at right shows Smith later in life, at his 500 acre farm in Cecil County, MD, where he lived with his wife. He and other family members are buried in Bayview Cemetery. Private Lymon Smith 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery Smith was a resident of Litchfield, CT when he enlisted on 8/6/62 as a Private. On 9/11/62 he mustered into Co. A, 2nd CT Heavy Artillery. He was killed at Cold Harbor on 6/1/64, where is he is buried. Photos courtesy of Charles & Kathy Roach |
