Sgt. George D. Oliver Co. I 1st CT Heavy Artillery. From Plymouth, CT. Enlisted May 23, 1861 as a Private. Promoted Corp. April 15, 1862. Reduced to ranks Sept. 16, 1862. Promoted Corp. Jan. 11, 1863. Promoted Sgt. Nov. 14, 1864. Re-enlisted. Mustered out Sept. 25, 1865. Documents accompanying photo indicate that Sgt. Oliver served on the crew of the famous mortar "The Dictator". |

3 Members of Co A 15th Conn. Vols. Left to right, 1st Lt. Marshall C. Augur, Capt. Julius Bassett and 2nd Lt George C. Merriam. This photo was taken when they served together as officers in Co A. Augur went on to be Quartermaster of the 15th and died of disease on Oct 11,1864. Bassett had previous service as a private in the 3rd Conn. He served as Captain of Co A of the 15th till he was killed in action on March 8, 1865 at Kinston, N.C. Merriam served as 2nd Lt in Co. A until his promotion to 1st Lt and transfer to Co E in May 1863. In Nov 1864 he was promoted to Captain in Co K of the 8th Conn. He mustered out on Dec 12, 1865. All three were from Meriden, Conn. This photo was ID'd by the family that sold it and I confirmed the IDs when I found Augur and Bassett pictured in the 15th's unit history. |
