RE: Presidential Physical Fitness Test August 28, 2007
Dear Parent(s): We are off to a great start in our physical education classes! Next week (9/4-9/7) we will begin our Presidential Fitness Test in grades 3rd-6th. This test recognizes students for their level of physical fitness in 5 events: curl-ups or partial curl-ups, shuttle run, endurance run/walk, pull-ups or right angle push-ups, and V-sit or sit and reach. The endurance run will take place in the gym and is either a ˝ mile run(10 laps around the gym) or 1 mile run (20 laps around the gym). Students may walk during the endurance run if they‘d like. The Physical Fitness Test offers three awards for students who meet the program qualifications: The Presidential Physical Fitness Award This award recognizes students who achieve an outstanding level of physical fitness. Boys and girls who score at or above the 85th percentile (based on the 1985 School Population Fitness Survey) on all five events are eligible for this award. The National Physical Fitness Award Students who score above the 50th percentile on all five events - demonstrating a basic, yet challenging, level of physical fitness - are eligible for this award. The Participant Physical Fitness Award Students whose scores fall below the 50th percentile on one or more events receive this award for taking part in all five events of the Physical Fitness Test. Please find attached the dates and tests for each class. I have also posted additional comments with each test as needed. This test will be given again in March to monitor each student’s progress. Thank you for encouraging your child as they prepare for these tests. Please take some time to explain to them that this is not a “pass/fail” test. All children are winners!
