Why Hoops For Heart & Jump Rope For Heart Are So Important

Coronary disease is our nation's No. 1 killer; stroke is No. 3 and a leading cause of serious disability. Every year, almost 950,000 Americans die from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That's about 40 percent of all deaths. These diseases may remain critical problems in the future because of poor lifestyle habits among American adults and children. For example, only 1 of 10 Americans participates in 30 minutes or more of vigorous activity every day. In addition...
Over 15 percent of children and adolescents are overweight.
4 million children have above-normal blood pressure.
27 million children have high blood cholesterol.

Healthy lifestyles can help prevent heart disease and stroke. Hoops For Heart helps get this message across to students.

Benefits for Our School

Hoops For Heart & Jump Rope For Heart are great service learning projects that provide students a terrific way to learn about volunteering. The program integrates physical activity and critical thinking skills as students help plan, organize and participate in the event. Hoops For Heart also encourages cross-age cooperative activity. It personalizes the research and education goals of the American Heart Association, rallies the students, parents, school, and community around a fun-filled event. Lastly, Hoops For Heart & Jump Rope For Heart will give our school gift certificates for Physical Education equipment based on dollars raised.
Parents:
Here's how you can help your kids make a difference for themselves and others. Encourage them to participate in Hoops For Heart & Jump Rope For Heart! When your child participates, he or she is joining the fight against heart disease and stroke, our nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, and learning the importance of physical activity and a healthy heart. Thank you!
This JRFH/HFH event will be the highlight of our jump-roping and basketball units, which will take place in January and early February. During the unit, our students will be doing several activities such as learning to jump rope, jump rope games, tricks, basketball skills, basketball games, etc. We will conclude the unit with our JRFH/HFH event! The event will take place during regular P.E. times, so there is no need for permission slips. Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart are a fun and effective way to teach heart-healthy living. It emphasizes the importance of physical activity, as children do something they enjoy- jumping rope and playing basketball. The event also provides the opportunity for children to perform community service as they raise funds for the American Heart Association.
