I had wanted to take this picture for quite some time. The class that I taught in the fall of 2000 was located at the Watertower campus at Loyola. This campus is so-named because of the watertower above that sits right next to it. This is the beginning of the "Magnificent Mile." The watertower was one of the few buildings in Chicago that did not succumb to the great fire of eight-teen something or other - the famous one with Mrs. O'Leary's cow. Around the Watertower is a small park where there are always musicians, entertainers, and weary shoppers. Once the Christmas season began, every night after my class I would come out and marvel at the lights. Victoria and I, always the festive sort, have been on hand for the traditional lighting of the Christmas lights along Michigan Avenue - an event that draws millions of Chicagoans into the frigid night air to watch a parade that as it moves lights up the millions of white Christmas lights that drape Michigan Avenue for the month or so prior to Christmas. |
