The famous Wrigley Building is lit up all night by a massive bank of floodlights that sit along the Chicago River, opposite the building.  This huge collection of lights stretching more than thirty feet long and five feet high creates a lot of ambient light at this famous intersection.  Here Michigan Avenue crosses the Chicago River and the "Miracle Mile" begins.  The night of the snowstorm, when I shot all of these images, the snow created a haze that softened the lights.  For this shot, I'm standing right above these lights, looking toward Lake Michigan.  I like this shot because it shows how hard to was snowing the night that I took all of these pictures.  It also illustrates the importance of light for a photograph.  Obviously, the snow is falling at the same rate over the river as it is over the sidewalk, however, there is not enought light to illuminate that snow.  Similarly, in most of the images in this gallery, it is hard to tell that it is currently snowing - the giveaway is the gray haze that envelopes all of the shots.  To protect my gear and to keep my lens from becoming spotty, I spent the night wandering around with an umbrella in one hand and my camera/tripod in the other.
